Senior Affairs Commission Page 2
Minutes of Thursday, January 13, 2000
ITEM 3 — UPCOMING FEDERAL ELECTION AND SENIOR HEALTH CARE
ISSUES
Superintendent Centeno reported that the letter the Commission requested to
be sent to Assemblyman Shelly was not sent. The reason was that
Assemblyman Shelly is going to re-enter the bill to the Assembly this year
with a few changes. Commissioner M.Walsh reported that Commissioner
L.Walsh asked her to speak on his behalf and request that letters be sent
from the Commission to all presidential candidates to invite them to come to
Redwood City to speak about health care. The Commissioners discussed the
idea and many felt that the Commission needed to work with our local
legislators before going to a national level. Many felt that it would be a
waste of time to send letters because the candidates would probably not
accept the invitation. Commissioner Walsh noted that Supervisor Mary
Griffin had previously agreed to get a resolution from the Board of
Supervisors in support of the Commission's recommendation. Judy Buchan
suggested contacting the County Central Committees for the Republican and
Democratic parties to obtain information on their support of health care
issues. It was also suggested that one of the Commissioners research this
topic on the web to obtain more information about what legislation is
pending and what senior groups are lobbying for health care reform.
Superintendent Centeno stated that the Commission needs to think about
what responsibility they would have if one of the presidential candidates
agreed to come to Redwood City in response to our letter. She also felt the
Commission needs to be more specific about what health care issues they
are interested in pursuing. Commissioner Borgens agreed to research the
web and AARP's web page to find out what their position is on health care
and if they are in support of any particular campaign.
ITEM 4 — WORKPLAN UPDATES
-Housing, Transportation, Employment
1. Traffic Crossings at Stafford Park
The Commissioners discussed the problem with pedestrians crossing at
Hopkins Avenue to get to Stafford Park and suggested the City consider
putting in a stop sign or electrical signal at King and/or Lowell Streets at
Hopkins. Commissioner M.Walsh volunteered to contact Traffic Engineer
Rich Haygood to discuss this matter.
M/S Borgens/Nobles: To recommend that Commissioner Marie Walsh speak
with Rich Haygood regarding pedestrian safety at Hopkins & King and
Hopkins & Lowell Streets and to request a traffic/safety study be done.
Judy Buchan suggested that the Commission contact Michael Verdone who
is the chair of the Edgewood Park Homeowners Association in this issue.
Motion passed unanimously.
-Health Care
This item was covered under Item 1 .
