Senior Affairs Commission Page 2
Minutes of Thursday,April 13, 2000
stressed that you must have approved coverage before you dis-enroll
from your health plan.
The group discussed legislative bills designed to address the senior
health care problem and ways to bring about change in the system.
They also discussed the fact that seniors are concerned about HMOs
and doctors who cannot deliver service, and that fees/costs and drug
coverage continues to be an issue. It was suggested that the
Commission follow up with the City Council and advise them that the
situation has gotten worse. Mr. Goldman felt that we need to educate
the senior population about health care to bring about change.
Ethel Walter said she has been discontinued service three times from
doctors and insurance companies and has since enrolled with Kaiser.
She is pleased with the service she is getting from Kaiser.
Madeline Schwartz said she was cancelled three times by different
insurance companies and is currently looking for a new doctor. She
may have to go out of the Redwood City area for service.
M/S L.Walsh/M.Walsh: To advise the City Council that the
HMOs are not working and are a problem for senior consumers;
to follow up with the City Council and provide them with details
about senior health care issues; and to follow up with the two
presidential candidates with letters and phone calls to come to
Redwood City.
Motion passed.
Chairperson Moran and Commissioner L.Walsh will work with
Superintendent Centeno on letter to City Council.
ITEM 2 — UPDATE ON TARGET EDUCATION AND WELFARE
COUNCIL INTERVIEW PROCESS FOR NEW PROVIDER
Superintendent Centeno reported that as of June 30, TEWCI will no
longer be providing services at the Fair Oaks Senior Center. Five
responses were received from new providers and two finalists were
selected to submit written proposals. Family Service Agency has been
selected as the new provider but no contract has been signed to
finalize the agreement. Superintendent Centeno reported that
discussions are being held with Family Service Agency to take over
existing senior services on July 1. She noted that Family Service is 50
years old, has a strong fundraising background and is also looking to
expand services. There are will many issues which need to be finalized
