Senior Affairs Commission Page 2 <br /> Minute's of Thut'sday,May 11, 2000 <br /> Superintendent Centeno noted that a plaque dedicating the building to TEWCI <br /> will be installed in mid-June and the Commissioners will be advised when the <br /> ceremony details have been finalized. Commissioner Nobles thanked <br /> Superintendent Centeno for her leadership during the transition period. <br /> ITEM 2 - UPCOMING FEDERAL ELECTIONS AND SENIOR HEALTH CARE <br /> ISSUES <br /> Commissioner L.Walsh spoke about the letters written to the City Council, <br /> George Bush and Al Gore as a result of our April meeting. The letters were <br /> to advise them of the senior health care problems in Redwood City and Bush <br /> and Gore have been invited to visit and discuss the matter. He feels that a <br /> Federal agency official should sit down with the doctors and HMOs to try <br /> and negotiate the differences. Chairperson Moran mentioned she heard <br /> about a class action suit against HMOs in San Mateo County and will follow <br /> up on this. <br /> ITEM 3 - POSITION ON PROPOSED BALLOT MEASURE TO CHANGE THE <br /> REQUIREMENT FOR PASSAGE OF BONDS FROM 2/3 TO 50% <br /> Commissioner L.Walsh spoke about the proposed ballot measure to change <br /> the requirement for passage of bonds from 2/3 to 50% plus one. He felt <br /> that if this ballot measure passed, it would result in increased property taxes. <br /> The Commissioners discussed having more accountability when school bonds <br /> are passed. Superintendent Centeno suggested having a representative from <br /> the Redwood City School District speak to the Commission on school <br /> financing and how funds are received from the State. It was also suggested <br /> having Jack Anthony, who was on the bond oversight committee, speak to <br /> the Commission on the status of the recent bond passage in Redwood City. <br /> ITEM 4 - WORKPLAN UPDATES <br /> -Housing, Transportation, Employment <br /> Commissioner Borgens reported that the sub-committee is still working on a <br /> housing plan. She mentioned she received a request from the Independent <br /> Newspaper requesting information on senior housing issues/crisis in <br /> Redwood City. Superintendent Centeno suggested referring the reporter to <br /> Debbi Jones-Thomas who could supply information on this topic. <br /> Commissioner Carpe felt that when the Commission has any media contact, <br /> they should be able to review and critique any article written as a result of <br /> information they have provided information. The Commissioners discussed <br /> the dedication ceremony of the Lincoln Avenue habitat for humanity project <br /> and the recent Council approval of the Habitat project on Rolison Road. <br /> -Outreach, Public Awareness <br /> Chairperson Moran read a letter her granddaughter wrote regarding the traffic <br /> problems surrounding Stafford Park. The Commissioners felt it was a good <br /> letter and asked that it be forwarded to the Council for further action. They <br /> discussed the increased traffic on Hopkins Avenue and felt that a signal light <br /> like the one on Jefferson in front of John Gill School be installed before <br /> someone gets hurt. It was also suggested that the abundance of street signs <br /> in the Stafford Park area be removed because they are not working to slow <br /> the traffic. <br />
