Senior Affairs Commission Page 2 <br /> Minutes of Thursday, September 14,2000 <br /> ITEM 1 - PRESENTATION BY COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT DIRECTOR <br /> DEBORAH NELSON ON DOWNTOWN CINEMA PROJECT <br /> Community Development Director Deborah Nelson spoke about the new <br /> interim urgency ordinance and the history leading up to its adoption by the <br /> City Council. The Commissioners expressed concern about lack of affordable <br /> senior housing due to the increase in the number of office buildings. Director <br /> Nelson also spoke about the status of the Downtown Cinema Project and the <br /> process the project is following. <br /> ITEM 2 -SENIOR HEALTH CARE ISSUES <br /> -HMO Forum <br /> HICAP presented a forum on "HMO Madness" on September 11 at the <br /> Veterans Memorial Senior Center in order to provide insurance information to <br /> seniors. <br /> -Follow-up on Council letters to legislators <br /> Superintendent Centeno reported that draft letters were prepared for the <br /> Mayor's review. Chairperson Moran agreed to contact the Mayor to follow up <br /> on the status of the letters. <br /> ITEM 3 — DISCUSSION ON PROPOSITION 39 <br /> The Commissioners were provided with an informational report on Proposition <br /> 39 from the State Legislative Analyst's Office. Commissioner L. Walsh spoke <br /> about AARP being in support of the proposition at a national level and the <br /> local Redwood City AARP organization in opposition to the issue. He reported <br /> he spoke with Geary Lloyd of AARP and Ted Lempert's office about this <br /> proposition. <br /> ITEM 4 - WORKPLAN UPDATES <br /> -Housing, Transportation, Employment <br /> Commissioner Borgens reported she has been researching "rent guidelines" <br /> in the Internet and will report her findings to the Commission. <br /> -Outreach, Public Awareness <br /> The Commissioners received a July activity report for the Fair Oaks Senior <br /> Center which was prepared by the new provider of services, Family Service <br /> Agency. Manager Griffith reported she spoke with Family Service Agency and <br /> reported a "seamless" transition" in services. New activities being offered at <br /> the facility which are well received by the participants. Superintendent <br /> Centeno announced that Teri Chin is the new Human Services Manager at the <br /> Fair Oaks Community Center effective August 28. <br />
