Senior Affairs Commission Page 2
Minutes of Thursday,May 10,2001
Ms. Annuzzi spoke about the free services provided such as tax preparation,
Reiki, and SASH (shopping program for home-bound seniors). She stated
that from July 1, 2000 through April 30, 2001, there have been 6,037 calls to
senior services which represented 2,761 calls for information, 1,736 referral
calls, and 1,540 calls for outreach and comprehensive assessment - all of
which were completed with Marlene working 20 hours per week. Ms. Annuzzi
felt that the most important issues for seniors (in order of priority) are: help
at home (assistance with cooking, cleaning, shopping); transportation
(because many senior do not drive); housing (186 calls for housing during
period of July 2000 to April 2001); home repairs.
Manager Griffith stated that she is seeing more seniors with depression
problems and it was suggested referring clients to the Peer Counseling
Program. The Commissioners thanked Ms. Annuzzi for her presentation and
the information she provided.
ITEM 2 - POLICY ON COMMISSION CORRESPONDENCE
Manager Griffith and Director Centeno spoke about the manner in which
Commission correspondence is requested and prepared. If the Commission
wants to send a letter, it must be voted on by the entire Commission.
Manager Griffith suggested that the Commissioner interested in sending a
letter bring the drafted letter to the Commission meeting where
Commissioners could review the letter, make changes and approve. The
draft letter could also be sent out in the Commissioners' packets and
discussed and approved at the following meeting. Manager Griffith also
suggested that a list of addressees be developed and approved by the
Commission, which would make it easier in deciding who should get a
particular letter. Director Centeno stated that any Commissioner can send a
letter individually. Commissioner L. Walsh would like to have the campaign
finance reform letter be sent to Congresspersons Anna Eshoo and Tom
Lantos.
Director Centeno announced that Manager Griffith will now be the liaison to
the Senior Affairs Commission.
ITEM 3 - COMMITTEE WORKPLAN UPDATES
-Transportation
Commissioner Moran asked about previous funding for a van for the Senior
Center. Director Centeno stated that staff has requested additional funds in
the FY2001-2002 budget to purchase a larger van for the Senior Center.
Commissioner M. Walsh asked about the Civic Cultural Commission having a
budget and asked if the Senior Affairs Commission could have a similar
budget. Director Centeno explained the budget process and that the
Advisory Council currently provides funding for a driver for the Senior Center
for two days per week but has agreed to pay for a full time driver.
