Senior Affairs Commission Page 3
Minutes of Thursday,July 12,2001
ITEM 5 - COMMITTEE WORKPLAN UPDATES
-Transportation
Commissioner M. Walsh will report on the Foster City shuttle service at next
month's meeting.
-Housing
Commissioner Borgens spoke about the need for affordable housing for
seniors and the recent meeting of housing groups concerned about this issue.
The Senior Center is looking for people to participate in "Community
Conversations on Housing". Please contact 780-7274 if you are interested.
-Public Awareness & Access to Services
The Commissioners discussed applying for a grant from Sequoia Hospital
District to fund programming and preparing a proposal requesting program
funding from Council. Commissioner Grove agreed to contact Manager
Griffith about preparing a proposal outline.
The Commissioners discussed the planned survey and Manager Griffith
reported that Canada College would not be able to provide any assistance in
tabulating the survey results. The Commissioners discussed preparing a staff
report to ask Council to provide funding to assist with the survey tabulation
process.
Commissioner Grove stated she felt the educational videos presented by
Manager Griffith at the May meeting were well received and asked what
Manager Griffith wanted to come out of this presentation. Manager Griffith
stated the videos were to educate the Commission on what types of services
are offered in other cities and to determine if we need more of these
programs in San Mateo County. Currently, the only other program like the
ones on the videos is Senior Focus in Millbrae. Manager Griffith stated that
we need information from the community about what types of senior services
are needed. Commissioner Grove suggested getting local newspapers to
write about the problems seniors have in accessing services. Chairperson
Harrison, Commissioner Grove and Manager Griffith will meet to discuss this
matter further.
-Senior Luncheon
This matter will be discussed at the August meeting.
-Strategic Planning Committee
No report at this time.
