Senior Affairs Commission Page 2
Minutes of Thursday, September 13,2001
M/S Carpe/M. Walsh: That the questionnaire be accepted and
applicable to anyone over the age of 50.
Motion passed.
M/S Moran/L. Walsh: To accept draft of letter dated September 5,
2001 to City Council.
Motion passed.
ITEM 2 — COMMITTEE WORKPLAN UPDATE
-Transportation
Commissioner Moran reported that she has met with a representative from
City Hall and has been assured that transportation issues are being
addressed and that any comments from the Commission are welcome.
Commissioner M. Walsh reported that shuttle service in Foster City is a
success and that such a program would probably succeed in Redwood City.
Paul Wirthlin presented information about the shuttle service in Menlo Park,
which he helped implement with survey information gathered from the public
as to where transportation services were needed. The shuttle holds 20
people and accommodates two wheelchairs. He reported that there is no
cost to citizens of Menlo Park for the service and that it is available to the
general public simply by signaling the driver. Before 10:00 a.m. and after
3:00 p.m., the shuttle is used to transport people to and from the train
station. Menlo Park received $52,000 from Measure A, $45,000 from
Redevelopment and Housing, and $30,000 from City and County
government. He recommended contacting Sandy Cohen of Aging and Adult
Services and Debbie Helming of the Menlo Park shuttle service for further
information. Commissioner M. Walsh reported that a Foster City
spokesperson informed her that Bill #3510 provides $65,000 in shuttle
funding if City Council would approve 20% of $65,000 and fares would pay
the remaining costs. The Commissioners agreed to invite Debbie Helming
and perhaps others to speak to the Commission on November 8, 2001.
The following item was taken out of sequence:
Commissioner Grove reported that she and Commissioner Moran interfaced
with Measure G, an $88,000,000. bond issue on November ballot. Seniors
are wanted on the steering committee. Both Commissioners are setting up
meetings with senior groups for Joanne Smith, Superintendent of the
Sequoia Union High School District, to make presentations about the current
status of the schools. A fact sheet was distributed from the Committee for
Yes on Measure G. A request was made for information from the measure's
opposition prior to the Commission taking any stand on the measure.
Chairperson Harrison will attempt to gather that as well as any non-biased
information. Manager Griffith will inquire about policies regarding the
Commission's endorsement of political issues.
