Senior Affairs Commission Page 3
Minutes of Thursday, September 13,2001
ITEM 2 - COMMITTEE WORKPLAN UPDATE - CONTINUED
-Housing
Commissioner Borgens reported that she attended the HUD Housing
Authority meeting with Vince Truscelli and other members of senior
community to discuss the need for senior housing. They were told that all
cities are requested to submit a Housing Element and to include a Senior
housing issue with it. HUD staff said that Redwood City has done it, but no
issues were brought forward in the Housing Element including senior issues.
Commissioner Borgens was told that they had not heard from anyone
regarding senior housing issues in Redwood City, though Commissioners
Borgens and M. Walsh as well as others have addressed them several times.
Commissioner Borgens has contacted City Council members as to why the
Senior housing issues had not been reported. They were told that specific
data is needed and found that "low income" not "affordable" is the better
term to use when addressing this issue. The current census, when released,
will provide more accurate information than what is currently available.
Discussion ensued regarding the lease of private land for low-income housing
and the lower rents now being offered to new tenants but current tenants,
often Seniors on fixed incomes, are not having their rents reduced. The high
cost of existing senior housing in Redwood City is not affordable to all that
need it. HUD does not provide housing just for seniors but is available to
disabled individuals of any age.
-Public Awareness and Access to Services
Commissioner L. Walsh reported that the trip to the San Mateo Historical
Museum is scheduled for October 25, 2001 at 10:00 a.m. with a speaker and
lunch to follow. He and Recreation Supervisor Devyatova will work together
to arrange for reservations, box lunches and promotion. Transportation to
the museum will not be provided. It was suggested that Michael Svanevik be
invited to speak at a Senior Affairs Commission luncheon early next year
since he was unable to attend this month. An acceptable date will be
negotiated with him.
-Strategic Planning Committee
No report this month
ITEM 3 - PROGRAM UPDATES
-Fair Oaks Community Center
No report this month. Susan Houston was unable to attend.
-Veterans Memorial Senior Center
Manager Griffith welcomed Yelena Devyatova to the center as the new
Assistant Recreation Supervisor. She also announced that October 19, 2001
is "Concerto Mandolino", a dinner concert at the center. Everyone is invited
