Senior Affairs Commission Page 3 <br /> Minutes of Thursday,November 8,2001 <br /> -Public Awareness &Access to Services <br /> M/S Grove/Moran: To rewrite a letter to Council requesting funding <br /> of senior survey from the election fund. Motion passed. <br /> Commissioner L. Walsh reported on the successful luncheon and lecture of <br /> October 25 at the San Mateo Historical Museum with Retired District Attorney <br /> Keith Sorenson and requested that more people get involved in the <br /> promotion of such events. Manager Griffith suggested articles be written for <br /> the newsletter after events occur to entice others to attend in the future. <br /> Discussion ensued about the difficulty of parking downtown and the <br /> possibility of getting special parking permits for Commission events. <br /> Commissioner L. Walsh suggested a speaker from the Police or Fire <br /> department for the February luncheon. It was also reported that all State <br /> bills requesting funds have been shelved, including the senior center <br /> expansion bill. <br /> -Strategic Planning <br /> No report this month. <br /> ITEM 3 - PROGRAM UPDATES <br /> -Fair Oaks Community Center <br /> Susan Houston reported that Fair Oaks Senior Center served more than <br /> 1,000 meals in October. Two hundred thirty six (236) new people have had <br /> lunch there since July. In October, 628 Redi-Wheels rides were coordinated <br /> and 20 students graduated from the computer program. Recruitment is <br /> underway for a bilingual case manager. A Thanksgiving luncheon is <br /> scheduled for next week. <br /> -Veterans Memorial Senior Center & Senior Services <br /> Manager Griffith reported a Weight Watchers program would be implemented <br /> at the Center if 20 people enroll. A report will be forthcoming about the <br /> Housing Panel for Seniors with Katie Howard held on November 7th at the <br /> VMSC. Special presentations, led by professionals, regarding coping with <br /> holiday stress and the tragedies of September 11th are being planned, as is a <br /> "comfort food" lunch. The Thanksgiving Gathering will be held on Friday, <br /> November 16th. A monthly birthday celebration and weekly chorus are two <br /> new programs that have been started at the Center. All are invited to attend <br /> the Holiday Sing-Along on December 20th <br /> -Intergenerational <br /> Discussion ensued about interaction between seniors and children at the <br /> center. Recreation Supervisor Devyatova will work on further development <br /> of such programs. <br />
