Senior Affairs Commission Page 2
Minutes of Thursday, February 14,2002
ITEM 1 - Commission Business
-Council Priorities
Manager Griffith reviewed the eight priorities recently established by Council
and requested the Commissioners review their work plan and whether to any
changes are suggested.
-Work Plan
The Commissioners decided to keep the Transportation, Housing and Public
Awareness & Access to Services on the work plan and to schedule tasks to
timelines. Vice Chairperson Grove requested that worksheets, from planning
session of late 2000, be sent to all commissioners within next two weeks.
Kathy will contact Denise regarding their availability and mail out. Work plan
will be on next month's agenda.
Item 2 - Committee Workplan Updates
-Transportation
Chairperson Harrison reported that Councilwoman Barbara Pierce would
formally present the Commission's transportation survey request to Council
at the February 18th or 25th Council meeting. It will then be placed on the
Council's agenda.
Manager Griffith reported that a Council member had recommended that the
Senior Affairs Commissioners research what grants and creative financial
solutions may be available, since Council receives many requests and funds
are limited.
Commissioner M. Walsh reported another organization that made a
presentation to Council, on January 28, 2002, regarding funds available for
shuttles in all the cities of San Mateo county. Mr. Apiur, Executive Director of
City Association of Governments, has millions of dollars for transportation
grants through CalTrans. The telephone number for more information is
(650) 599-1406. Jim Hartnett has done research and may have further
information. Palo Alto funded it's own shuttle which costs them $450,000.
per year. San Mateo shuttle cost that city $20,000. per month. Manager
Griffith reported that she is working on a grant for a 5310B van but wasn't
sure the strict criteria could be met in order to qualify for funds. Creative
funding and collaboration approaches may be necessary to improve
transportation services. Further participation in the transportation survey is
encouraged. Commissioner M. Walsh will contact Dave Nelson of the Traffic
Congestion Alliance regarding grant information.
-Housing
No report was given this month.
-Public Awareness & Access to Services
No report was given this month.
