Senior Affairs Commission Page 3 <br /> Minutes of Thursday, February 14,2002 <br /> -Strategic Planning <br /> Vice Chairperson Grove will contact Commissioner Borgens regarding the <br /> placement of this topic under the heading of Public Awareness or Program <br /> Updates. <br /> Item 3 — Program Updates <br /> -Fair Oaks Community Center <br /> Susan Houston introduced Fair Oaks Senior Center staff Zena Vigileos, Senior <br /> Activities Coordinator; Enrique Casolla, Director of Senior Employment <br /> Services; and Carla Garcia, Case Manager. Silicon Valley Urgency Fund has <br /> given $25,000. to the Fair Oaks nutrition program which will provide for <br /> breakfasts and a weekly free meal at the center. $25,000. has also been <br /> received from Microsoft to help fund the $50,000. computer lab, which <br /> serves 60 people. AARP is offering now bilingual tax preparation services at <br /> Fair Oaks. In January, 950 lunches were served, 484 rides were provided to <br /> the Center, and 23 new patrons attended. <br /> -Veterans Memorial Senior Center & Senior Services <br /> Manager Griffith reported that the sold out Valentine Dinner Dance would be <br /> tonight. The sixth annual Women's History Event will be on March 9, 2002. <br /> AARP tax services are offered every Wednesday at the Center. SASH <br /> volunteers are needed. The Martin Luther King, Jr. Freedom Festival was held <br /> at the Veterans Memorial Senior Center on Monday, January 21, 2002 and <br /> was a great success. Dates and locations of the Senior Affair Commission <br /> meetings are now listed in the Citywide Guide. <br /> -Senior Services <br /> Vice Chairperson Grove requested a report at next month's meeting on <br /> number of requests for assistance in paying energy bills have come in the <br /> last half year. <br /> -Special Projects or Programs <br /> Commissioner L. Walsh requested a letter be sent to elected officials <br /> thanking them for passing the campaign reform bill and requesting their <br /> support for senior housing and local transportation. A letter was drafted to <br /> be sent next week. A March 6, 2002 meeting was planned to discuss the <br /> future of Senior Affairs Commission Luncheons and Speakers. <br /> M/S M. Walsh/L. Walsh: To send the drafted letter to <br /> representatives with thanks for their support of campaign finance <br /> reform and asking for support of Senior housing and transportation. <br /> Motion passed. <br />
