Senior Affairs Commission Page 4 <br /> Minutes of Thursday,May 9,2002 <br /> ITEM 4 - PROGRAM UPDATES <br /> -Fair Oaks Senior Center <br /> Susan Houston invited everyone to Fair Oaks Community Center's Open <br /> House on May 16, 2002. A Volunteer Appreciation dinner honored 70 people <br /> last week. The Cinco de Mayo party held last week was informative and <br /> entertaining. A Mothers' Day celebration is planned for next week. <br /> Preschoolers will sing for the seniors at that event. On May 24, 2002, the <br /> Veterans Memorial Center Choir will perform for the Fair Oaks Senior Center <br /> patrons. Canada College Olive Festival planners have contacted her <br /> regarding the possibility a senior picnic during their event. <br /> -Veterans Memorial Senior Center <br /> Manager Griffith reported 250 people attended the Volunteer Appreciation <br /> Party. The food presentation will beautiful. The Human Race will be held <br /> Saturday, May 11, 2002. Donations continue to be accepted. The staff has <br /> been working very hard and have been successful in promoting programs and <br /> special events since several newspaper articles have been written about the <br /> Center within the last few months. <br /> In April, 370 rides were provided by the Center's van; senior services units <br /> numbered 786 and 391 informational units were provided; and 250 tax <br /> returns were prepared at the Center this year. <br /> The Hot Summer Nights Dinner Dance will be on June 6, 2002. A barbeque is <br /> planned for this summer and special projects are continuing. <br /> ANNOUNCEMENTS <br /> -Commissioner Moran reported on the RSVP Volunteer Recognition event in <br /> South San Francisco earlier this week. She also encouraged participation in <br /> the Architectural Treasure Hunt of Redwood City. <br /> -Commissioner M. Walsh announced that the Senior Affairs Commission <br /> Luncheon scheduled for May 16, 2002 will be cancelled. <br /> -Commissioner Grove suggested a performance by the Gypsy Folk Ensemble <br /> at the Veterans Memorial Senior Center on Friday, May 24, 2002 as a Senior <br /> Affairs Commission sponsored celebration. Manager Griffith will check on the <br /> feasibility and report back. <br /> -Commissioner Carpe discussed various scheduling and timing problems <br /> patrons are having with Rediwheels. <br /> The regular meeting of the Senior Affairs Commission was adjourned at 3:05 <br /> p.m. to be reconvened at 1:00pm on Thursday, June13, 2002 at the Fair <br /> Oaks Senior Center, 2600 Middlefield Road, Redwood City, California. <br />
