Senior Affairs Commission Page 3
Minutes of Thursday, September 12,2002
services are provided at curbside. Garbage service is currently available
either at curbside or the backyard for the same rates, though the cost for
backyard service is significantly higher. A customer survey taken last year
resulted in responses from one quarter of the City's users of garbage service
users. It showed that most people use curbside service. Of those that use
only backyard service, most are not opposed to paying one or two dollars
more per month for backyard service. Increased rates are not proposed for
users of backyard service, who are physically unable to place cans at
curbside.
ITEM 2 — HEALTH AND WELLNESS FAIR
Recreation Supervisor Yelena Devyatova announced the upcoming Health
and Wellness Fair to be held at the Veterans Memorial Senior Center on
Saturday, September 28, 2002 from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. More than 45
booths will be located throughout the building. Massage therapists, Reiki
practioners, and chiropractors will be in attendance. Evaluations of bone
density, body fat and flexibility will be available. Healthy breakfasts and
lunches will be sold and the profits will benefit the Center's clubs. Volunteers
will assist as tour guides, cashiers and servers. Clowns will be entertaining
with balloons, games and face painting. Yoga and Tai Chi demonstrations
will presented. Keynote speaker Dr. Bennett Kilpak will give a 45 minute
presentation titled Vitality, Aging and Quality of Life; Your Attitude and
Perspective May be Injurious to Your Health. Musical entertainment will also
be provided. Everyone was invited to attend. Commissioners Grove and
Moran volunteered to staff a Senior Affairs booth at the fair.
ITEM 3 - COMMITTEE WORKPLAN UPDATES
-Transportation
Commissioner Carpe reported having recently learned that Ira Ruskin is on
San Mateo County Transportation Authority board. She plans to meet with
him soon.
Marlene Annuzzi reported that beginning September 19, 2002, the Kaiser
shuttle will come to the Veterans Memorial Senior Center every Monday and
Thursday mornings and transport people with morning appointments to
Kaiser from the Center and back again. VMSC can provide transportation
between homes and the Center to those that need that service. In August,
302 van rides were provided by the Center. The number of riders and
requests for rides are increasing.
-Housing
Commissioner M. Walsh reported that she has spoken to Council Member Jim
Hartnett several times and stated the need for housing that is specified for
those people on fixed incomes, as seniors are.
