Senior Affairs Commission Page 4 <br /> Minutes of Thursday, September 12,2002 <br /> Marlene Annuzzi reported the recent availability of some low-income housing <br /> units. Bonnie Brae in Belmont, Park Towers in San Mateo, Rotary Hacienda <br /> in San Mateo all have openings on their waiting lists. Notices have been <br /> posted and further information is available. <br /> -Public Awareness & Access to Services <br /> Commissioner L. Walsh discussed increasing senior outreach programs. He <br /> has spoken with the pastor of Mt. Carmel Church about senior parishioners <br /> coming for lunch and orientation, possibly in mid or late October. He is <br /> interested in being involved in such a program to its growth. Commissioner <br /> Carpe stated that Fair Oaks and Veterans Memorial Senior Centers should <br /> both be included in orientation process. <br /> Zena Vigileo expressed that the senior Tongan population is currently rather <br /> isolated and would like to see them better served in the community. <br /> Commissioner Carpe stated that she has some Tongan contacts and that she <br /> will share senior services information with them and report back to the <br /> Commission. <br /> -Strategic Planning Committee Update <br /> No report this month. <br /> Item 4 - Program Updates <br /> -Fair Oaks Senior Center <br /> Zena Vigileo reported that 1,888 meals were served to seniors in July and <br /> August and 994 para-transit rides were a provided in that time. <br /> Grandparents Day was celebrated on Monday, September 9, 2002. <br /> A fiesta celebrating Mexican Independence Day will be held on Friday, <br /> September 13, 2002 and 68 people have signed up to attend. <br /> -Veterans Memorial Senior Center <br /> Yelena Devyatova announced the Autumn Leaves Dance would be held on <br /> Thursday, September 19 with big band music and refreshments. On <br /> Wednesday, September 25, a presentation on Aging and the Human Spirit <br /> will be offered free in Room 20 of the Senior Center Annex at 1:00 p.m. In <br /> August 2002, 38 Reiki treatments were provided at the Center. <br /> ANNOUNCEMENTS <br /> -Marlene Annuzzi announced that a Housing Symposium would be held on <br /> Saturday, September 21, 2002 at City Hall from 9:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. <br /> Homeowners or Renters' Assistance Tax preparers will be at the VMSC on <br /> Wednesday, September 25, 2002 to assist those require their services. <br /> Rebuilding Together Peninsula has volunteers to make home repairs; <br /> applications for services are available and due by October 15, 2002. <br />
