66
by Councilman Lambert .
Sam D . Merk, Director of the San Mateo County C .Q .A., asked that those officials representing
the Council in C .W.A. projects be officially authorized to sign any necessary papers . On
motion of Councilman Beeger , seconded by Councilman Lambert , City Manager , E. A. Rolison
and City Engineer , C . L . Dimmitt , were so authorized and the Clerk instructed to send
Hr . Merk the necessary credentials .
Col . John H. Skeggs , District Engineer of the Division of Highways , suggested , in a letter
dated March 7 , that definite action on the establishment of the setback line on El Camino
Real be postponed until the completion of a survey which he was now making.
In a letter signed by R. 71 . Steffens for the El Camino Players , dated March 15 , permission was
asked of the Council that the Council give official approval to the change of name , namely ,
"Redwood City Community Players " . This the Council did and the Clerk was instructed to
write them to that effect .
A letter was received from James Smith of Redwood City , no street address given , in which com-
parison was made of the success of the Fire Department and the Police Department , request-
ing that something might profitably be done to help the Police Department . The letter was
ordered filed.
A letter was received from a special committee of the Chamber of Commerce concerning a map and
literature for the City of Redwood City , suggesting that 3 , 000 copies of a combined map
and folder could be printed at a cost not to exceed $200. 00 , which amount it was requested
the City contribute . The Council indicated that it was favorable toward the proposal but
was not sure whether the money would be available . It was therefore decided to leave it
to the City Manager to arrange to the best advantage .
D . L . Walter , in a long letter to the Council , suggested several proposals which might be of
benefit to the City. As the proposals really concerned the Planning Commission , the
letter was ordered sent to them for consideration .
Under old business , the Card Game Ordinance came up for consideration again and letters were
read from the Olive Branch of RebeJc9h Lodge and also from the Redwood City Promotion As-
sociation. Mrs . Charles Rider for the Woman ' s Club appeared to talk on the proposal . After
considerable discussion , on motion of Councilman McCarthy , seconded by Councilman Lambert ,
it was decided not to draw up a specific ordinance covering the situation but to charge
Mr . L. J. Thein $1 . 00 a night , $3 . 00 a month for one night a week, and $9 . 00 a quarter for
one night a week, with the understanding that fraternal societies , churches , and similar
organizations , where the proceeds are used for club benefits , would not be charged .
C . L. Dimmitt , City Engineer , made a partial report concerning the extension of Maple Street .
Concerning the local relief office , the Clerk: indicated that San Carlos was ready to contribute
its share , but that no word had been received from Atherton or Menlo Park. The City Mana-
ger , in connection with this report , said that he had received word that it would not be
necessary , perhaps , for the local communities to finance this office .
