MINUTES OF REGULAR ii' TINc <br /> REDWOOD CITY COUNCIL <br /> MARCH 5 , 1934 <br /> g ; JO P .M . <br /> Upon roll call , the following Councilmen were present : Mayor , W . J. Dusel , R. A. Beeger , <br /> C . J. H:ildebrant , R. N. Jones , C . G. Lambert , Paul A. McCarthy , Goo . W . McNulty. City <br /> C1&r&, B . E. Myers . Absent ; None . <br /> The minutes of the mooting of February 19 were approved on motion of Councilman McCarthy , <br /> seconded by Councilman Laribert . <br /> The Greater South Redwood Improvement Club asked the Council to have a white line painted <br /> down the center of the Woodside Road to minimize the likelihood of running off the road <br /> during foggy weather. The request brought out a discussion of the desired improvement <br /> of the Woodside Road as previously considered and after a further report by Councilman <br /> Beeger , it was finally decided, on his motion , seconded by Councilman McCarthy, that the <br /> Engineer and the Manager be .instructed to proceed toward the building of a culvert on the <br /> easterly side of the Woodside Road , the construction to consist of masonry walls , concrete <br /> paved floor with a reinforced concrete slab on top to provide sidewalk facilities , the <br /> wort to be started in the block between Cypress Street and hurray Court ; the City to con- <br /> tribute $2, 150 and San Mateo County a like sum, for the cost of materials and equipment ; <br /> the labor to be furnished by the County Emergency Relief Administration. <br /> A letter was received from the California Highway Co.:uaissi on indicating that that body had passed <br /> a resolution recoamending and requesting that the City Council and the Planning Commission <br /> of Redwood City take such action as may be necessary to establish setback lines along El <br /> Camino Real within the corporate limits to provide a clear area 100 feet wide for the state <br /> highway. In line with this letter, and following up the expressed sentiment of a special <br /> citizens ' meeting a week before , on motion of Councilman McCarthy, seconded by Councilman <br /> Hildebrant , the City Engineer and City Attorney were instructed to have a conference with <br /> the State Highway Coiraission as to the establishment of the center line for the highway and <br /> then to prepare an ordinance establishing setback lines in conformity thereto for the 100—ft . <br /> highway. <br /> There was read a letter from Sam D. Merk, Director of the San Mateo County Emergency Relief <br /> Administration , in which he said that the relief formerly carried by the C .V? .A. was discon- <br /> tinued and asked that Redwood City appropriate $100 a month toward the maintenance of local <br /> relief offices , effective March 1 . It was suggested that the City Manager ascertain wlmt <br /> was being done by the surrounding communities of Atherton, Menlo Park and San Carlos , as our <br /> local district office would serve that territory. The Clerk was also instructed to write <br /> these three cities a letter asking that they together contribute $50 . 00 to be matched by a <br /> $50 .00 contribution on the part of Redwood City to maintain such a district office . <br /> At this meeting the question of the introduction of a "Card Party Ordinance" was to come up for <br /> consideration, but L. J. Thein, Manager of the card game, asked the privilege of discussing <br /> the matter with the Council before the ordinance was prepared, and he , together with Attorney <br /> - - - - <br />
