.aINUTES OF REGULAR MEETING
REDWOOD CITY COUNCIL
AUGUST 21 , 1933
g : 00 P . M .
Upon roll call , the following Councilmen were present : Mayor W. J. Dusel , H. A. Beeger ,
R. N. Jones , C . G. Lambert , Geo . W. McNulty , City Clerk , B . E . Myers . Absent : Council-
men , C . J . Hildebrant and Paul A. McCarthy .
The minutes of the meeting of August 7 and the special meeting of August 14 were approved
on motion of Councilman Lambert , seconded by Councilman McNulty .
Mrs , Bess Balcomb and Mr . H. L . Williams asked permission of the Council to use the barn on
Mr . William ' s property on Middlefield Road as a studio and to make the necessary repairs .
On motion of Councilman Jones , seconded by Councilman Lambert , permission was granted
to make the alterations , provided they were done under the supervision of the Building
Inspector .
A. Vassere , 432 C4rlos Avenue , requested the Council to arrange to have a light installed in
that vicinity . The matter was referred to the City Electrician to investigate and report .
H . C . King , representing the Sportsmen ' s Club which had been using the club house at the
harbor , asked the Council if it would be possible to waive the payment of the rent as
many of the members were inactive , proposing that perhaps a fixed charge could be made
for each time the club met . The Council indicated its willingness to cooperate and left
the matter in the hands of the City Manager .
The selection of an auditor for the city for the ensuing fiscal year was brought up for con-
sideration by the City Clerk who presented several letters from firms desiring to bid
for the work and also read three specific proposals from Charles H. Peterson of San
Francisco , C . E . Piatt of San Mateo and C . G . Uhlenberg of Redwood City . while the
Council did not have any complaint to make concerning the work done during the past
two years by Mr . Piatt , it was felt that the auditing should be done by a local man if
there were such a man qualified living in Redwood City. It was , therefore , decided on
motion of Councilman McNulty , seconded by Councilman Beeger , that the contract for the
next year ' s auditing be awarded to C . G . Uhlenberg.
Mr . F . Morton , representing Foster & Kleiser , asked permission to install panels on the Bay—
shore Highway between Main Street and Jefferson Avenue , on El Camino Real at Pine and
Lathrop Streets , and also on El Camino Real opposite Harrison Street on the Southern
Pacific property . Considerable discussion was had concerning the number of signs in
Redwood City and the desirability of not having any more . It was finally decided , on
motion of Councilman Jones , seconded by Councilman Beeger , that the policy of the Council
would be hereafter to allow not more than 4+0 such panels . The present aprlication was
granted with the understanding that there should be no traffic hazard , no adverse criti-
cism from the neighbors , that there should be not more than 110 panels and that the signs
be erected under the supervision of the City Manager , Building Inspector and Chief of
Police .
