REPORT <br />To the Honorable Mayor and City Council <br />From the City Manager <br /> <br />September 12, 2016 <br /> <br />SUBJECT <br />City of Redwood City Resolution in Support of "Bay Day", October 1, 2016 <br /> <br />RECOMMENDATION <br />Adopt a Resolution in support of "Bay Day", October 1, 2016 <br /> <br />BACKGROUND <br />Bay Day is a newly dedicated annual celebration spearheaded by Save the Bay, in <br />partnership with the Association of Bay Area Governments (ABAG), to designate <br />October 1, 2016 as a special day when the Bay Area comes together to celebrate San <br />Francisco Bay. On Bay Day, dozens of cultural attractions, community organizations, <br />small businesses, non-profits and parks all around the Bay Area will host special, Bay- <br />themed programs so residents can explore, enjoy, and learn more about our Bay. <br /> <br />Cities and counties are taking action to officially recognize October 1, 2016 and the first <br />Saturday of October in future years as "Bay Day." <br /> <br />ABAG is the administrator of several regional projects and is working with the San <br />Francisco Estuary Partnership, the San Francisco Bay Restoration Authority, the San <br />Francisco Bay Trail and the San Francisco Bay Area Water Trail, on bringing <br />awareness through Bay Day. ABAG is requesting that all cities and counties in the Bay <br />Area pass proclamations recognizing October 1, 2016 and the first Saturday of October <br />in future years as "Bay Day" in recognition of this valuable resource that defines our <br />region. <br /> <br />ANALYSIS <br />The mission of the Association of Bay Area Governments (ABAG) is to strengthen <br />cooperation and collaboration among local governments to provide innovative and cost <br />effective solutions to common problems that they face. ABAG also provides planning <br />and research resources related to land use, housing, environmental and water resource <br />protection, disaster resilience, energy efficiency and hazardous waste mitigation, risk <br />management, financial services and staff training to local cities and towns. <br /> <br />6.3.C. - Page 1
