Community Development status report on the Housing and Human Concerns
Commi ttee' s Draft Rel ocat i on Pol i cy C l u 01- v 7
Report: Community Development Director, July 11, 1990
Exhibit Al: 1989 Income Tax Return for Iftekhar A. Hai
Housing and Redevelopment Director Michael Church presented the staff
report.
a. City Attorney Schricker advised this item is two -fold in respect to
general subject matter of relocation assistance. Housing and Human
concerns Committee report is brought forth at this time since A -1 Motel
displacement of persons was brought to Council attention last week, and
Council directed preparation of emergency ordinance. The Housing and
Human Concerns Committee report is a broader version of a relocation
assistance ordinance and the emergency ordinance is narrower in scope and
applies to short term tenancies and low income people. The City is
considering adopting a permanent ordinance to provide relocation benefits
and this emergency ordinance would be effective for only 90 days. The
two items are related but separate. The Housing and Human Concerns
Committee report is provided to give perspective on the relocation
assistance issue, and the only action item is the emergency ordinance.
Debbie Jones - Thomas, Redwood City Housinq Coordinator, advised that
conversations with Iftekhar Hai, owner of A -1 motel, indicate that the
number one obstacle tenants face is the lack of resources to relocate.
Iftekhar Hai has offered $300 for relocation within two weeks. The
tenants, represented by Legal Aid, have asked for $500 relocation costs
plus security deposit or last months rent. By agreement the owners have
not collected rent for the month of July.
MINUTE BOOK NO. 50
Page No. 017
Page 2
