Redwood City Community Youth Budget <br /> <br /> Dr. Milbrey McLaughlin with the Stanford John Gardner Center, announced that <br /> the John Gardner Center was awarded a grant for $750,000 to support its work in <br /> Redwood City. <br /> <br /> Lorne Needle, with the John Gardner Center, described the pilot Youth Budget <br /> Project in some detail. <br /> <br /> He explained that the John Gardner Center staff analyzed how various agency <br /> budgets in 2000-01 were used to benefit youth in Redwood City. Mr. Needle <br /> commended the County, City of Redwood City, and school districts for collaborating <br /> at this level with the intention to benefit the youth. He shared that 64 programs and <br /> services from 11 public and private institutions generated $11 million in Redwood <br /> City and Fair Oaks focusing on youth. <br /> <br /> Furthermore, it was explained how those funds were being spent and provided an <br /> analysis of the funding gap for services for youth. <br /> <br />8. Facilitated Discussion <br /> <br /> Jen Bullock and Katie Howard, Peninsula Conflict Resolution Center, facilitated a <br /> discussion addressing the youth budget project. <br /> <br /> Some of the issues discussed included (but were not limited to): the funding gap, the <br /> need to disseminate the successes of this collaborative effort, and bilingual <br /> education. <br /> <br />9.
