HSFA Applicants FY 02-02 Attachment II <br /> <br /> BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF AGENCY FUNDING REQUESTS <br /> <br /> BIo Brothers Big Sisters of SF ~r~d the Peninsula - Mentorinq for At-Risk Youth <br /> For 44 years, the Big Brothers i~g Siste:*~ of San Francisco and the Peninsula has worked to improve the <br /> lives and futures of thousands of at-nsk children. The organization's major focus is on establishing <br /> mentorin§ relationships between adult volunteers and children. Big Brothers Big Sisters provides <br /> screening, orientation and training, and ongoing support and supervision for the matches. $23,250 was <br /> requested to support the further development of this program for Redwood City youth. <br /> <br /> Boys and Girls Club of the Peninsula - Learninq Center Pro.qram <br /> The Boys and Girls Club of the Peninsula provides a safe, positive, and fun place to inspire and enable <br /> young people, especially those from disadvantaged circumstances, to realize their full potential as <br /> productive, responsible, and caring citizens. The Morris clubhouse in the Fair Oaks neighborhood of <br /> Redwood City supports children with homework, computer training and social interaction - helping youth <br /> develop self-esteem and confidence, especially in the academic arena. $10,000 was requested to support <br /> the Morris clubhouse's Learning Center and Computer Lab. <br /> <br /> Casa de Redwood - Senior Connections <br /> Provides Iow income elderly persons with housing facilities and services designed to meet their physical, <br /> social, and psychological needs. The "Better Living for Seniors" program promotes health, security, <br /> happiness, and usefulness in longer living by providing educational, social and recreational activities to <br /> enhance senior's lives. The program includes English as a second language classes, exercise classes, <br /> trips to the museum, zoo, and theatres, and employment through the Senior Companion progrem. $7,500 <br /> was requested to support the Better Living for Seniors program. <br /> <br /> Center for Domestic Violence Prevention - 24 Hr. Crisis and Support Lin~ <br />CDVP services are designed to address the needs of victims of domestic violence as well as to prevent <br />future occurrences of domestic violence. These services include: a residential shelter; a transitional <br />house; legal services; counseling services; linkages to other social services; advocacy; a 24-hour crisis <br />and support line; a comprehensive program of prevention services; and the Emergency Outreach <br />Program which responds to every domestic violence case reported by any police Jurisdiction in the county. <br />$22,000 was requested to support the 24 hour emergency crisis and support telephone services to victims <br />and potential victims. <br /> <br />The Center for Independence of the Disabled (CID) <br />CID offers a variety of services including: Client assistance program; housing accessibility modification; <br />financial benefits counseling; information and referral; community education and outreach; advocacy; <br />Shopping Assistance for Someone who is Homebound (SASH); and volunteers in money management. <br />$8,000 wes requested to help CID provide their overall programs to Redwood City residents. <br /> <br />Community Education Center (CEC) <br />The CEC, a nonprofit (licensed child care center), multicultural preschool program in Redwood City, <br />provides a positive pre-school experience in English and Spanish for primarily Iow-Income families in the <br />surrounding communities. The program lays a foundation for children to be successful in school, <br />community, and life by nurturing children in a safe, accepting environment and encouraging families and <br />the community to take an active role in their children's development. $30,000 was requested to support <br />CEC's overall program. <br /> <br />El Centro de Ltbertad/The Freedom Center- Students Makinq a Responsible Transition (SMART) <br />The Freedom Center is a nonprofit outpatient alcohol and drug abuse treatment center. It provides a safe <br />place to begin the process of recovery from alcohol and drug addiction, and relapse prevention. El <br />Centro's S.M.A.R.T.
