<br />MINUTE BOOK NO. 50 <br />Page No. 219 <br /> <br />d. <br /> <br />Councilwoman Buchan showed the Council and audience the Certificate of <br />Recognition from the California Legislative Assembly signed by Assemblyman <br />Ted Lempert presented to Mayor La Berge, Councilwoman Buchan and the City <br />Council of Redwood City for its proactive role in developing a Child Care <br />Policy and taking a leadership role in addressing child care needs. <br /> <br />Councilman Greenalch described the Peninsula Open Space Trust request for <br />endorsement of Congressman Tom Campbell's bill to include the Phleger <br />Estate in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and asked that <br />consideration of this matter be referred to the Council Legislative <br />Committee. <br /> <br />e. <br /> <br />CONSENSUS: It was determined by Mayor La Berge that it was the consensus <br />of the Council to refer this matter to the Council Legislative Committee. <br />MEMO 4/9/91 <br /> <br />f. <br /> <br />Councilman Greenalch reported on the bill introduced by Assemblyman Bates <br />and co-sponsored by Assemblywoman Speier to establish a pilot Neighborhood <br />Family Assistance Service Organizations program. Redwood City school <br />officials participated in drafting this legislation which seeks to identify <br />a limited number of neighborhoods in California and have school districts, <br />city government, county government and social service agencies together <br />deal with the problems underlying poverty in that neighborhood. If <br />approved by the Legislature, Redwood City could apply for participation as <br />one of the eight pilot programs in the state. <br /> <br />CONSENSUS: It was determined by Mayor La Berge that it was the consensus <br />of the Council to refer this matter to the Council Legislative Committee. <br />MEMO 4/9/91 <br /> <br />g. <br /> <br />Councilman Bury invited everyone to attend "Expo '9l" sponsored by the <br />Redwood CitYISan Mateo County Chamber of Commerce to be held at the Hotel <br />Sofitel on April 10, 1991 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. <br /> <br />Mayor La Berge and City Manager Smith described the recent trip to the City <br />of Zhuhai, Guangdong Province, China exploring Sister City relationships, <br />community promotion, cultural and educational exchanges and trade <br />possibilities. The seventeen member Redwood City and San Mateo County <br />delegation was welcomed most warmly. Mayor La Berge showed the Council and <br />audience the gifts given to Redwood City by their Chinese hosts, and <br />described a future visit by a delegation from Zhuhai to Redwood City. <br /> <br />h. <br /> <br />i. <br /> <br />Councilman Greenalch thanked Mayor La Berge for doing such an outstanding <br />job representing Redwood City and the United States, and being so aware and <br />so sensitive to the peoples and cultures she visited on her trip. <br /> <br />(CONTINUED AFTER ITEM 8c.) <br /> <br />Regular Meeting Minutes <br />April 8, 1991 <br />Page 4 <br />! <br />
