In addition to the Pirate Ship as the focal point to a new park element adjacent to the
Redwood Shores Library, staff envisions picnic tables, outdoor children’s reading area,
shade structures that look like sails, access to and from the children room at the Library,
and the involvement of children to contribute to an artist book related to the story of the
Pirate Ship.
The Redwood Shores Library sits along the shore of the San Francisco Bay Trail.
Locating the Pirate Ship here, a site that draws visitors both to the Library and to the
Bay Trail, is ideal. Fung Collaboratives has reached out to the Bay Conservation
Development Commission (BCDC) who through initial discussions express their support
of the proposed location. The Association of Bay Area Governments (ABAG), through
the Bay Trail Division, is extremely motivated to assist the installation of the Pirate Ship
since it would be the first permanent artwork for the Migration art exhibition organized
by Fung Collaboratives and the Bay Trail.
If approved by Council, this would be the first step in a longer process of community and
other stakeholder input for the future design of the park space; the repair, assembly and
retrofit of the Pirate Ship to ensure that it would meet playground and ADA standards;
and the future requests for proposals for landscape design and construction firms for
installation.
As proposed, Fung Collaboratives will represent the artists and facilitate the transfer of
the artwork by the Kabakovs. As described in the Professional Services Agreement,
Fung Collaboratives will provide the following:
· Provide all plans, conditions report, and specifications for any needed
preparations and repairs
· Work with artists on redesign on the “Pirate Ship” so that the upper deck will be
accessible but will maintain the aesthetics by the artists
· Work with the artists and the City on conceptual designs for the future park space
· Work with the Landscape Architect and provide guidance through the future park
and installation project
· Provide input and information as it relates to BCDC, ABAG and Bay Trail
approval processes
· Advise the City on possible grant opportunities related to the Project
· Coordinate with Project Manager and Landscape Architect for the installation
process
· Lead the effort of working with local children on the development of an art book
related to the project.
· Assist with coordination of the children’s aspect of the future project such as
inspired shade sails in the park

ALTERNATIVES
The City Council may choose not to enter into a professional services agreement with
Fung Collaboratives.

6.1.G. - Page 3
