6.1.D. - Page 1
REPORT
To the Honorable Mayor and City Council
From the City Manager
December 12, 2016
SUBJECT
Agreement between the City of Redwood City and the Sequoia Healthcare District to
receive a $400,000 grant for the Magical Bridge Playground at Red Morton Park
RECOMMENDATION
By motion, approve and authorize the City Manager to execute the grant agreement
between the City of Redwood City and the Sequoia Healthcare District to receive
$400,000 to help pay for construction of the Magical Bridge Playground at Red Morton
Park
BACKGROUND
On September 12, 2016, the City Council approved an agreement between the City of
Redwood City and the Magical Bridge Foundation for fundraising, design consultation,
and community outreach efforts related to a new Magical Bridge Playground at Red
Morton Park.
Designed to be a socially inclusive playground for children of varying physical and
cognitive abilities, a Magical Bridge Playground addresses the unique play needs of the
many different children in the community. Current playground designs often overlook
the growing autistic population, visually and hearing impaired individuals, and people of
any age with other physical limitations.
For the past two fiscal years, the City Council has appropriated funding towards the
complete renovation of the large playground within Red Morton Park. A total of $2.1 M
has been appropriated towards the project that included hiring a Landscape
Architecture firm, conducting a traffic study, master planning for improving bicycle and
pedestrian safety and accessibility to Red Morton Park, planning for pathway and way -
finding improvements, amenity plans, design and construction drawings for a renovated
playground and picnic area, and the construction itself. The September 12, 2016
agreement with the Magical Bridge Foundation set aside $1.5M of this project budget
towards the playground itself, while the Magical Bridge Foundation would be
responsible, in partnership with the City, for raising the additional estimated $1.8M
needed to fund the total $3.3M cost to build the Magical Bridge Playground.
