401
Minutes of Regular 'Weekly Study Meeting
Redwood City Council
February 6, 1967 7:30 P. M.
Meeting called to order at 7:30 p.m. by Mayor Herkner.
Proposed time schedule for consideration of Park & Recreation Element of the General
Plan.
City Manager advised Council that Staff and Planning Commission recommend that the
proposed element of the General Plan be now referred to the Park & Recreation
Commission for a quick review and any comment they wished to add before being sub-
mitted to Council for action, resulting in a probable month's delay from time
schedule originally proposed.
Planning Director reported Planning Commission had held two public hearings and
had approved and recommended the plan for adoption by the City Council as the Parks
and Recreation Element of the General Plan, but had also recommended that Park and
Recreation Commission be allowed additional time to study the report before hearings
by the Council. He stated it was the Park & Recreation Commission's desire to
allow the citizens' sub -committees to review the proposed plan in view of their
interest and work on the plan from the beginning, although a quorum of the Park
and Recreation Commission had been in attendance at both the public hearings
before the Planning Commission.
Council was advised public hearing would be set for Council action as soon as
this review had been made.
Mayor Herkner introduced press representatives from San Jose Mercury, San Mateo Times,
and Redwood City Tribune.
Mayor Herkner also asked that Mrs. T. N. Thompson accept Council's congratulations
upon her well deserved honor of having been chosen as the "Citizen of the Year."
Junipero Serra Freeway Alignment.
City Manager reported a request had been received from the City Administrator of
San Carlos, who is the Acting Secretary for the San Mateo County Council of
Mayors, relative to their request that the Redwood City Council consider approving
a recommendation adopted by them for a realignment of the Junipero Serra Freeway.
He stated proposed resolution urged the State Division of Highways to realign the
Freeway route along the high crest of the San Francisco watershed property rather
than down along the Canada Road as now proposed. He stated that Mayor Herkner, as
Council's representative on the Council of Mayors, had requested this be considered
so he might have the benefit of Council's thoughts before he was asked to vote
at the next meeting. City Manager advised this alignment could have considerable
bearing on the final decision of the College Site Selection Committee for locating
a State College on the Edgewood Hills property. He advised however, none of _
realignment proposed will fall within the corporate limits of Redwood City so not
a legislative matter before the Council but alignment would have an influence as
to whether City and County of San Francisco would be willing to discuss a long
term lease of some 150 acres of land which the proposed State College site needs.
