SUMMARY
Your Committee firmly believes that the foregoing guidelines relating to
recommended routes, hours of operation, and fares, represent a workable plan
to implement our long awaited Municipal Transit system. We are cognizant of
the fact that it will be necessary to revise our method of operation as we
gain experience in the field of public transportation. We remain optimistic
that we will develop a model transit system which will prove a credit to the
City of Redwood City.
In reply to Council questions regarding consideration for a reduced fare for
children, Councilman Petersen advised Committee had recommended one rate fare
of 25¢ for the beginning of bus system. He stated Committee had many ideas
they intended to research in the way of rates for commuters, promotional re-
duced rates, in conjunction with merchants, etc., but because of short timing
schedule to get buses in operation there had not been the opportunity to ex-
plore bus rates any further at this time.
In reply to questioning whether action could be taken by Council at this
time to provide the funds for tape recorder systems in the buses as this
had not been included in the Budgeting previously, City Manager advised in-
asmuch as buses had been wired for this music system when buses were built,
recorders for all six buses would only involve a total of $840, being $140
each. He also stated it was felt a revenue would be derived from selling
advertising space to be interspersed with the music recordings.
Fred Garrett, of Servi-Car Company, answered other
questions of Council on timing of the bus routes
which were being tested now and their hopes in
these trial runs to reduce schedules and perhaps
make other recommendations in the routing to better
cover areas after bus system is in actual operation.
Councilman Petersen assured Council that their concern on reduced rates for
children would be reviewed by the Committee as it was intended that a prov-
ision be made for several different types of rates, but asked that Council
permit Committee to continue its study on this point in view of suggestions
which had been made.
Councilman Bury moved to accept Committee report with request that all Council
comments be reviewed by Committee and expressed Council's appreciation for the
splendid job that had been done to acquire City's new bus system, seconded by
Councilman Henderson and carried. (MINUTE ORDER #68-66)
Councilman Petersen requested that Council also consider taking action approving
funding for the recording system at this time. He advised funds were available
because of the savings made on the purchase of the used Pare boxes and would
ask that $1000 be approved for this purchase. Councilman Bury moved to accept
Committee's recommendation for purchase of tape recorders for installation in
the six buses and appropriate funding be made, seconded by Councilman Rosselli
and carried. (MINUTE ORDER #68-67)
N 11 •68
