DES.ek 2/9/68 <br />RE SOLUT ION NO. 56 /Z <br />RESOLUTION ENDORSING THE ACTION OF THE CALIFORNIA <br />LEGISLATURE IN ITS SUPPORT OF A CALIFORNIA BICENTENNIAL <br />CELEBRATION AND PETITION TO THE POSTMASTER GENERAL <br />OF THE UNITED STATES TO ISSUE A STAMP COMMEMORATING <br />SUCH BICENTENNIAL <br />WHEREAS, in November, 1769, Governor Gaspar de Portola <br />and his Expedition, exploring the Coast of California discovered <br />San Francisco Bay from Sweeney Ridge in San Mateo County; and <br />WHEREAS, from the wilderness the Portola Expedition <br />encountered, this state has grown to a stature and eminence <br />unparalleled by any other state of the Union; and <br />WHEREAS, the commemoration of the Bicentennial of the <br />Portola Expendition is an event in which this City, located <br />upon the historic El Camino Real, can take unique and singular <br />pride; and <br />WHEREAS, an event in which the history of this Nation <br />has had such tremendous outgrowth is worthy of national <br />recognition; and <br />WHEREAS, the practice of the United States Post Office <br />Department to issue commemorative postage stamps is a suitable <br />means by which all the citizens of the United States may join <br />with Californians in commemorating the Bicentennial of the <br />Portola Expedition; <br />NOW, THEREFORE,- <br />BE <br />HEREFORE; <br />BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF REDWOOD CITY, <br />AS FOLLOWS: <br />1. This Council endorses the action of the State Legis- <br />lature in its support of a California Bicentennial Celebration <br />and urges all the citizens of Redwood City to cooperate in <br />efforts to promote such celebration and make it a success. <br />2. This Council further endorses the petition by the <br />Legislature on Senate Joint Resolution No. 9 wherein the <br />
