Section 4.0— Environmental Setting and Discussion oflmpacts
differential settlement at the site is also low. As discussed below, however, there is the potential for
non -liquefaction induced differential settlement to occur at the project site.
Lateral SvreadinR
Lateral spreading is a type of ground failure related to liquefaction. It consists of the lateral
movement of saturated soil deposits towards an open face. Redwood Shores Lagoon is located along
the western boundary of the project site. The project site is flat, and the liquefaction potential at the
site is low. For these reasons, the potential for lateral spreading to occur at the project site is low.
4.6.1.4 Differential Settlement
The project site is underlain by approximately 40 feet of saturated and soft bay mud sediments that
continue to settle under the weight of the existing fill and structures on the site. The weight from the
placement of additional fill and/or structures on the project site would result in increased settlement.
If fill and/or structures are not sufficiently distributed across the site, differential settlement could
occur,
4.6.1.5 Landslides
The project site and surrounding area are flat and, therefore, the potential for landslides to affect the
site is very low.
4.6.2 Environmental Checklist
GEOLOGY AND SOILS
Would the project:
1) Expose people or structures to
potential substantial adverse effects,
including the risk of loss, injury, or
death involving:
a) Rupture of a known earthquake
fault, as described on the most
recent Alquist-Priolo Earthquake
Fault Zoning Map issued by the
State Geologist for the area or
based on other substantial
evidence of a known fault?
(Refer to Division of Mines and
Geology Special Publication 42.)
b) Strong seismic ground shaking?
City of Redwood City
Sandpiper Elementary School Facilities Expansion
Less Than
Potentially Significant Less Than
Beneficial Information
Significant With Significant No Impact
Impact Mitigation Impact Impact Source(s)
Incorporated
❑ ❑ ❑ ® ❑ 1,8,9
❑ ❑ ❑ ® ❑ 1,8,9
41 initial Study/Mitigated Negative Declaration
November 2016
