Section 4.0 – Environmental Setting and Discussion of Impacts <br /> <br /> <br />City of Redwood City 82 Initial Study/Mitigated Negative Declaration <br />Sandpiper Elementary School Facilities Expansion November 2016 <br />4.14 PUBLIC SERVICES <br /> <br />4.14.1 Existing Setting <br /> <br />4.14.1.1 Fire Service <br /> <br />The Redwood City Fire Department provides fire protection services to the project site. The fire <br />department includes seven fire stations and currently has over 90 staff members including <br />firefighters, firefighter/paramedics, captains, battalion chiefs, and fire prevention, training, and <br />administrative staff.33 The fire station nearest to the project site is Station #20, which is located <br />approximately 0.4 miles southwest of the school at 680 Redwood Shores Parkway. <br /> <br />4.14.1.2 Police Service <br /> <br />Police service to the project site is provided by the Redwood City Police Department. The <br />Department is comprised of 96 sworn officers, 36 civilian employees, four reserve officers, and 25 <br />volunteers.34 The City is divided into eight patrol beats. The police department is located <br />approximately 5.2 miles southeast of the project site at 1301 Maple Street. <br /> <br />4.14.1.3 Parks <br /> <br />Redwood City has over 30 parks and two outdoor pools.35 Sandpiper Park and Sandpiper <br />Community Center are located on the project site. Sandpiper Park includes a synthetic turf athletic <br />field, a play structure, and a paved recreation area with a basketball court. Sandpiper Community <br />Center includes a kitchen, multi-use room, conference rooms, administrative offices, and a parking <br />lot. An existing Joint Use Agreement between the City and the District allows the District to use the <br />community center, sports fields, and parking lot as part of school operations and an after-school <br />daycare program. <br /> <br />4.14.1.4 Schools <br /> <br />Sandpiper Elementary School is part of the Belmont-Redwood Shores School District.
