SPECIAL ORDERS OF THE DAY AND PUBLIC HEARINGS
None
PUBLIC COMMENT
None
MATTERS OF COUNCIL INTEREST
la. Woodside Terrace Kiwanis Club request to hold a
Carnival July 1 through 4, 1990
Report: City Manager 2/6/90
Letters: Philip H.J. Wang, Woodside Terrace A.M. Club Kiwanis
International
Philip H. J. Wanq, representing the Woodside Terrace A.M. Club Kiwanis,
described last year's carnival and distribution of its profits to charitable
organizations in Redwood City, the experience gained from last year, talks
with the Peninsula Celebration Association regarding a carnival for July 4,
1990, and the PCA's request for 50% of the profit.
Peter McFall, PCA, 841 Hamilton, Redwood City advised that the PCA
sought a carnival last year to offset the extra expenses of the 50th
anniversary celebration, but did not approve of the Kiwanis' choice, and
disassociated itself from it. Mr. McFall added that the PCA does not want a
carnival at its parade, festival and fireworks on July 4th as it does not
enhance the image of Redwood City they seek to endorse. However, in
response to Council questions Mr. McFall acknowledged some members of the
PCA might feel a carnival would be appropriate if the carnival contributed
to the expenses of the celebration.
Dean Whitecloud, 1290 Warren Street, No. 1, Redwood City, spoke in favor of
carnivals in general and last year's Kiwanis carnival in particular.
Peter Hughes, PCA, 841 Hamilton Street, Redwood City advised Council that
the PCA Board, in August 1989, voted against inviting a carnival to
participate in the July 4, 1990 celebration.
Vic Holbrook, 28 Diller, Redwood City spoke in favor of the carnival and
noted both organizations support charitable works.
Council discussed the 4th of July and what it means to our country and to
Redwood City, the fact that many organizations should and do celebrate this
holiday, the positive impact of the PCA promotion on carnival attendance,
and how best to benefit the community.
MINUTE BOOK NO. 49
Page No. 215
Reg.
