5. SPECIAL ORDERS OF THE DAY -- <br />A. Peninsula Sunrise Rotary — Acknowledgement of Contribution toward <br />Landscaping for the Courthouse Plaza Project <br />Mayor Ira thanked Lorianna Kastrop, representing the Peninsula Sunrise Rotary <br />for the donation toward the landscaping in relation to the restoration of the <br />courthouse. Ms. Kastrop stated that they wanted to be among the leaders in the <br />community to support the courthouse plaza project and in honor of Rotary's <br />Centennial Year in 2005. Rotary is interesting in projects that inform the public <br />and make a lasting monument in honor of Rotary in all communities around the <br />globe. She explained that Rotarians raise funds, do hands on projects to benefit <br />the local community and participate in humanitarian efforts worldwide such as <br />the 20 -year effort to eradicate polio on the planet. Rotary meets Tuesday <br />mornings for breakfast at the Waterfront Restaurant at Pete's Harbor and last <br />year the club donated over $47,000.00 to charitable projects and organizations. <br />She invited those interested in joining Rotary to a mixer on Tuesday, September <br />21 from 5:30 -7:00 p.m. at Sequoia Yacht Club and announced the annual Irish <br />Night scheduled for Saturday, March 19 at the Veterans Memorial Senior Center <br />in Redwood City. <br />6. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS AND CONSENT CALENDAR <br />Linda Kresge, Chief Nurse Executive of Sequoia Hospital, stated that she wanted to <br />make clear that in support of the community hospital, community access for <br />emergency services is critical and that means appropriate housing and support for <br />healthcare workers. She expressed support for the project. <br />Cherlene Wright, lifelong resident of Redwood City, thanked the City Council for <br />components included in the project such as $10 million for transportation, $10 million <br />toward the water supply, and accessible housing. She stated that she is an <br />employee of San Mateo County and that, unfortunately, nearly half the people in her <br />department do not live anywhere near their place of employment due to the <br />expense. <br />Jim Kirkland, longtime Redwood City resident and business owner, stated his <br />support of the Marina Shores project. He stated that the merits of the project stand <br />for themselves in meeting the needs of the community and businesses.
