Car Stacking Systems — The following notes shall be placed verbatim on the construction plans [COA][FIRE]: Purpose: To establish the requirements for fire protection required for car stacking systems inside buildings to ensure the safe installation of these systems and prevent the spread of fire, should one occur. These requirements are in addition to any other requirements specified in the California Fire Code, NFPA 13, car stacker manufacturer's requirements and recommendations. Definition: Car Stacker — A manual or automatic rack storage system designed to park cars vertically and/or horizontally such that the vehicles are in close proximity to one another and pose an additional hazard due to fire spread. Design Density: Parking areas inside buildings or under attached canopies equipped with car stackers shall be protected by an automatic fire sprinkler system designed to a density of Extra Hazard Group 2. Standard coverage sidewall sprinklers, listed for Ordinary Hazard, shall be provided under each parking level, including the bottom level if the car stacker uses a basement or pit area. The maximum coverage of a sidewall sprinkler is 80 sq. ft. and the use of extended coverage sidewall heads for protection is prohibited. Design Area: The area of application may be reduced, but never less than 1,500 sq. ft., if: a. One-hour rated walls are provided between the stacker parking area and other standard parking stalls or storage areas. b. The car stacker system is divided into maximum 1,500 sq. ft. areas by one- hour fire barriers. NOTE: For hydraulic calculations, flow from all fire sprinklers, upright, pendant and sidewall sprinkler heads, at all levels, located in the area of application, shall be included in the hydraulic calculations.
