The following people spoke against banning assault weapons in Redwood City: <br />David Haussler, 155 cerrito Avenue, Redwood City citing Government Code 53071 <br />giving the state the right to regulate firearms; Redwood City ordinance will <br />be challenged in court; gun control laws do not deter crime as evidenced in <br />New York City and Washington D.C.; Redwood City has no right to confiscate <br />property from law- abiding citizens; semi - automatic weapons are used for <br />hunting, target practice and self- defense; punish criminals by enforcing <br />existing laws and don't punish legitimate gun owners. (Submitted letter of <br />3/6/89) <br />Vic Holbrook; 28 Diller Street, Redwood City citing need to enforce existing <br />laws, not create new ones to punish law- abiding citizens; Redwood City does <br />not have problem with assault weapons; impossible to tell who is gang member <br />and who is not and supports 800 number to check on would -be gun buyers; and <br />talk of ban has caused orders for asault weapons to soar. <br />Frank King, 4002 Farm Hill, Redwood City citing the role of the media in <br />exploiting an isolated incident of the senseless murder of five innocent <br />children and creating the myth that assault weapons are evil and if we ban <br />them the violence in our society will go away; cars kill more people than <br />guns but no one asks to outlaw cars; the Constitution was designed to <br />prevent tyranny and we all have the right to bear arms. <br />David Joe, 4056 Park Boulevard, Palo Alto citing the right of people to bear <br />arms guaranteed by the 2nd Amendment. <br />Discussion ensued regarding the 2nd Amendment and limitations on types of <br />assault weapons and other firepower within the context of the Constitution as <br />a whole and the intent of the founding fathers. <br />---------------------------------------------------------------------------- - - - - -- <br />Reg.Mtg.
