Letter from Philip H. J. Wang, Woodside Terrace
A.M. Club requesting permission to hold a
July Fourth Carnival on the south lot of city
parking lots on Winslow Street.
Report: City Manager 4/20/89
John S. Hensill, President, Redwood City Farmers Market, advised Council that
the Farmers Market has been operating for 9 continuous years using the north
lot for produce growers and customers and south lot for parking. Loss of
this parking would cause tremendous traffic problems and loss of revenue to
the growers who provide the service so valued by the Market's loyal
customers. The market closed when July 4th fell on a Saturday, but does not
feel it is fair to ask the market and its customers to forfeit their Saturday
produce selling /shopping for a carnival that could operate elsewhere in the
city. The Farmers Market permit with the City includes use of the entire
parking lot.
Geri Mayers, 2303 Broadway, Redwood City, spoke in favor of the Carnival
operation as part of the July Fourth celebration and objected to the parking
problem created by the Farmers Market every Saturday.
Paul Sanfilipo, 138 Woodswo rth, Redwood City, displayed map of downtown area
and suggested Carnival be allowed to use the parking lot behind See's candy
shop which would be safer and closer to the celebration; and requested that
the PCA be the one administrative organization to oversee all July Fourth
activities.
Philip H. J. Wang and Edward J. Voss representing Woodside Terrace A.M. Club
Kiwanis International described the benefits to be derived by the residents
of Redwood City through the funds generated by the Carnival conducted by
Butler Amusement; the agreement with Butler; need for 10 -hour set -up time;
time constraints to notify Butler Amusement; number and placement of trailers
and vans; the advantages of this particular site; and why the City should
provide and pay for police patrols at a total cost of $3,000.
Reg.Mtg.
