Impacts to public services would occur if the project increased
demand for services such that new or expanded facilities would be required, and these new facilities
would themselves cause environmental impacts. As discussed below, the proposed project’s impacts
to existing public services would be less than significant.

Fire Protection. Although a portion of the project site is located within San Mateo County, fire
protection and life safety services for the site are provided by the Redwood City Fire Department
(Fire Department) because the building itself is located within the City boundaries. The Fire
Department operates seven fire stations which serve the cities of Redwood City and San Carlos. The
Fire Department currently has over 90 staff members including firefighters, firefighter/paramedics,
captains, battalion chiefs, fire prevention staff, training staff, and administrative staff.103 During the
2012/2013 fiscal year, the year for which the most recent data is available, the Fire Department
responded to 7,656 calls for service, 5,221 (nearly 70 percent) of which were medical related.
