REPORT
To the Honorable Mayor and City Council
From the City Manager

August 28, 2017

SUBJECT
Resolution approving the temporary street and sidewalk closures for the Sheriff's
Activities League Food, Wine, & Heroes fundraiser

RECOMMENDATION
Adopt a Resolution approving the temporary closure of Broadway, between Hamilton
and Middlefield Road, as well as the west sidewalk of Broadway between entrance of
Starbucks and the entrance of Quinto Sol for the Sheriff's Activities League Food, Wine,
& Heroes fundraiser

BACKGROUND
The Sheriff’s Activities League (SAL) has held a variety of fundraisers throughout
Redwood City in the past decade, but this will be the second time this particular event
has been held at this location.

ANALYSIS
The San Mateo County Sheriff’s Activities League has been “connecting cops with kids”
through a variety of sports, mentoring, arts and dance, healthy living, leadership, and
character development programs since its’ founding in 1997. The mission of the
Sheriff’s Activities League is to invest in all youth of San Mateo County by creating
opportunities that guide them toward their full potential through impactful programs
which foster relationships between deputies, youth, families and the community.

The San Mateo County Sheriff’s Activities League is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization
that operates as part of the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office and has a long track
record of delivering on its’ commitment to provide positive partnerships between the
youth, deputies, and communities through their provision of safe, affordable and
purposeful programs that make the difference in the lives of children. SAL relies heavily
on donations to be able to financially support and administer programs involving
relationship building between cops and kids, teaching children to eat right and be active,
mentorships, leadership training, character development, and several other similar
activities. In fact, all funds raised through donations and/or fundraisers go directly to
serve the youth in our communities. Administrative costs are covered by the San Mateo
County Sheriff’s Office and grants.
6.3.A. - Page 1
