Janna Fakier, Redwood City resident representing Whole Foods Market, announced the store grand opening on Wednesday, November 17 and a gala on Monday, November 15 from 5:30 -8:00 p.m. She stated that an invitation would be arriving in the mail and the suggested donation of $15.00 will go to "Project Read" and the gala will include food, drinks and a band. She stated that the community is invited. Janet Borgens thanked Council for participation in the 12 Annual Unsung Hero event on Saturday, October 16. She stated her appreciation for the certificates provided by Mayor Ira and attendance by Vice Mayor Pierce and Council Member Bain. Kathleen Kane stated that Redwood City is part of the Sequoia Healthcare District and she asked for assistance in re- electing the incumbents for the Sequoia Healthcare Board of Directors. She stated that without the District's help, Samaritan House would not receive the financial backing for its primary health care clinic that cares for the uninsured and working poor population. She further stated that the District contributes up to $1 million each year for the County's children's' health care initiative and many children receive assistance through the program. She stated that there is a misperception that the District is giving taxpayer dollars to Catholic Healthcare West (CHW). She stated that Sequoia Healthcare Services has a 30 -year contract with CHW to manage the hospital. Robert Baldwin stated that it seems every third home in the community has a political sign displayed and his curiosity around Measure Q prompted him to ask residents why they are voting against the measure. He cited various responses to his question and stated that now we are hearing from the developer that if Measure Q does not pass there will be big box stores built. He asked the Council to clarify the matter with the voters on this point. Cary Bloomquist, third generation Redwood City resident, stated that his family has observed many changes such as population, density, traffic and services having increased. He further stated that as a parent, he spends a lot of time in the bay front areas and one of his issues related to quality of life is controlled intelligent growth. He stated his hope that all options have been explored and that Council has considered everyone's opinion whether or not people have the support or the high profile support that the opposition may have. He stated his opposition to Measure Q and asked that Council consider the legacy to be left after the vote. Mayor Ira stated his preference that discussion be conducted outside of the Council Chamber in order to conduct City business and to not set a precedent for future years that politicking is appropriate at the Council meetings.
