2. Presentation of proclamation declaring "Veterans <br />Memorial Poppy Week" May 15 -21, 1988 <br />Vice Mayor LaBerge read the proclamation and presented it to Nancy Johnson of <br />American Legion Auxiliary Unit #105 and to Charles McAleer of the VFW. <br />Ms. Johnson thanked Council for the proclamation and invited everyone to <br />attend the annual Memorial Day services at Union Cemetery on May 27, 1988, <br />and the breakfast following the ceremony at the American Legion Post on El <br />Camino Real . <br />---------------------------------------------------------------------------- - - - - -- <br />ORAL COMMUNICATIONS <br />Charles McAleer, Commander, VFW, announced that Jack Anthony of the Senior <br />Affairs Commission, will be the incoming Commander, commencing in July 1988. <br />---------------------------------------------------------------------------- - - - - -- <br />MATTERS OF COUNCIL INTEREST <br />a. Councilman Claire asked Mayor Greenalch to inquire of the Board of Port <br />Commissioners as to whether they would consider changing the regular meeting <br />time, since prospective applicants for appointment to the Board have cited <br />the afternoon meeting time as d i ff i c u l t for them. <br />MEMO 5/10/88 <br />b. Councilwoman <br />Buchan <br />reported <br />she had attended the meeting of the Traffic <br />Committee on <br />May 5, <br />1988 and <br />that Committee members are anxious to pursue <br />the matter of <br />their <br />request <br />to become a Commission. <br />City Attorney Schricker said that his office has been working on it, but that <br />it is primarily a policy decision by Council. Mr. Schricker said that the <br />d i ff i c u l t y in reviewing the matter, as requested by Council, is because of <br />the overlapping of assignments with those of existing City commissions. <br />c. Councilman Bury reported that the owner of Fitzgerald's which has been <br />conducting a "Going Out of Business Sale" has asked him to ask Council for a <br />30 -day extension of his permit which expires on May 14, 1988. He said that <br />Mr. Fitzgerald is writing a letter to Council making the request and inquired <br />as to whether any procedure exists to allow an extension. <br />C ity Attorney Schri cker s ai d the ordi na nce i s mandatory wi th regard to <br />discretion of either Council or staff to extend a permit period for a "Going <br />Out of Business Sale".
