Municipal Services Center site could not be used for new police facility, why a <br />civic center including a police station could not be built to avoid a piecemeal <br />approach. <br />City Manager Smith stated it would cost an additional $4.5 million to replace the <br />MSC east of Bayshore, and echoed Council sentiments that all would prefer to have <br />civic center in downtown area, but costs are prohibitive, financing is <br />unavailable, and police station is needed now. <br />Carl Kriletich, 70 Foss Drive, expressed concerns about the new site and its <br />proximity to the old sewage plant, and the possibility of chemicals and toxic <br />materials in the ground which would cause problems in the future. He suggested <br />the Council consider investing in property now and using the sale profits to <br />finance part of the facility when the land is sold. <br />Community Development Drector Pawloski described testing to be done before <br />final decisions are made. <br />Carl Tiedeman, 2370 Goodman, suggested the new police facility should be built on <br />the current site of the Municipal Services Center, 1400 Broadway, and a new MSC be <br />built on the proposed police facilities site east of Bayshore. <br />Al Davies, 1101 E1 Camino Real, stated the City should have a Civic Center <br />including a police station in the downtown area, work with the County Sheriff's <br />Department to share facilities, and look into 50 Franklin Street as a more <br />suitable site for the new police facilities. <br />Ed Bailey, 3215 Page, suggested the Council allow his group to build a new police <br />facility for Redwood City in exchange for the 27 acres of land in the Marina <br />Sub -Area. <br />Helen Abdelhamid, 1060 E1 Camino Real, spoke in favor of exchanging a new police <br />station for the Marina Sub -Area. <br />Steve Riter, Vintage Park Properties, advised Council that his company was very <br />interested in the Marina Sub -Area for a mixed -use development. <br />Council advised they would not talk with individual developers and would consider <br />sending out an RFQ at a later date. Councilman Claire described Granite Rock <br />and Lyngso objections to residential use of the area. <br />Teresa Oklabzia, 73 Turnsworth, objected to decentralizing city services and <br />buildings, and suggested a 4 -5 story downtown building housing all facilities. <br />Kevin Willett, Police Dispatcher, described concerns about the'east of Bayshore <br />site which include flooding, chemical spills tying up traffic, loss of walking <br />access to County Court and other facilities, and suggested 50 Franklin or area <br />behind new fire station as possible suitable sites for new police facilities. <br />Nita Spangler asked if one 5 -6 story civic center building could house all <br />facilities, and suggested working with the County. <br />Study.Session <br />8/11/88 <br />Page 2 <br />MINUTE BOOK NO. 48 <br />Page No. 158 <br />
