Jack Berry suggested there were security problems and cost considerations in <br />housing police facilities with other services, and Ben Pawloski described cost per <br />square foot and other impacts of such a structure. <br />Police Chief Guardino expressed his sincere thanks to his personnel who work <br />under very trying conditions, the community, Council and staff for their <br />understanding of the pressing need for a new police facility, and described <br />conditions and usage of current site, availability of service from east of <br />Bayshore with considerations of community protection first, provisions for <br />earthquake escape routes, current and future staffing and cost impacts. <br />In response to questions Jack Berry and Bob Schiller explained the cost impacts <br />and less than desirable resulting building if current facility refurbished, and <br />emphasized the necessary parking structure as the high cost contributor. <br />Police Officer Hughes asked value of Zimmerman Field, and Council described <br />state law that requires equal exchange of land if this property sold. <br />Police Officer Bubniak expressed the urgent need for a new building now. <br />Deputy Chief Hamilton expressed his dismay at the cost of a new facility, and <br />reminded the Council that costs go up every year. <br />Community Development Director Pawloski advised that architectural plans are <br />proceeding and these plans would probably not be suitable for any other site. <br />Vice Mayor LaBerge thanked everyone for participating in this study session, <br />and reaffirmed the need for a new police facility to be built as soon as possible <br />from available resources. <br />ADJOURNMENT <br />Vice Mayor LaBerge declared the study session adjourned at 9:35 p.m. <br />ARL N C.
