MINUTES OF REGULAR ADJOURNED MEETING <br />REDWOOD CITY COUNCIL <br />DECEMBER a4 P 1936 <br />8;60 o'clock P.M. <br />Upon roll call, the following Councilmen were present: Mayor Paul A. McCarthy, L. C. Christensen, <br />J. M. Eva, E. A. Fletcher, R. N. Jones, G. W. McNulty and City Clerk, B. E. Myers. Absent: <br />Councilman Wm. Rohn. <br />Councilman Fletcher, seconded by Councilman Eva, proposed the adoption of the following resolution <br />in connection with the activities of certain groups operating to have P.W.A. refuse contribu- <br />tions toward the new office building for San Mateo County, protesting such action and request- <br />ing copies of resolution to be sent to the Board of Supervisors, P.W.A. officials and other <br />City Councils. Unanimously carried. <br />WHEREAS a resolution has been adopted -by an Improvement.Club..of the City of <br />San Mateo expressing its opposition to necessary enlargement of the office facilities <br />1 and constructionrof a new- building for the conducting of business of certain depart- <br />ments of the. County of San Mateo adjacent:.ta,the Court House at,Redwood.City, and again <br />urging the removal of the County Seat to the City of San Matep;.and <br />1 <br />WHEREAS the County Seat of San Mateo County has been located:at,Redwood City <br />for SO years and. the County has invested more than $300,000 in a Court House and a <br />j separate building for the Sheriffs office. and County Jail in Redwood City., and.an <br />abandonment thereof would cause. the- loss. of a very substantial part of.said .investment.. <br />by reason of the inadaptability of either -of said..buildings for any purposes other <br />than that for which they are designed and built; and <br />WHEREAS `the great increaseof the <br />population of San Mateo County since. the.. <br />construction df said building. necessitates gradual.extensioal.of office, apace and the <br />construction of new buildings adjacent to said.Court House for the construction of <br />i the first of which a.substantTal grant has been.made•by Public -Works Administration <br />of the United States which will.greatly minimize the cost of such building to.the <br />taxpayers of San Mateo County, and therefore should be availed of promptly; and <br />j WHEREAS. the great• improvement in highways. and facilities for transportation <br />has rendered the. present. Court Haase. -much more accessible today than. when originally <br />established in Redwood City, and the trend..of.population has been and will be for many <br />1 years southerly in San Mateo County; and <br />f <br />WHOM the City of Redwood City is a focal point. for citizens,.of..the. whole <br />County by reason of numerous highways centering.in.Redwood Cityas.a hub, all of which.. <br />facts render any change of the County Seat uneconomical, wasteful, unnecessary and un- <br />desirable; <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Redwood <br />City does hereby deprecate.the continued agitation for a change of the,County Seat of <br />San Mateo County and respectfully request the Public Works Adminiatration.of the United <br />States and the Board of Supervisors of the County of San Mateo to regard..the location <br />of the County Seat thereof as permanently settled; that efforts to.disturb the.loca: <br />tion of the County Seat be discouraged.and that,the proposed -grant to the county of <br />San Mateo by the Public Works Administration of the.United.States to aid said.County <br />+ in providingg additional office space conveniently accessible to the Court House be <br />based upon a determination that said County Seat at Redwood City is permanent; <br />FURTHER RESOLVED that copy of this resolution duly certified.by the Clerk <br />of the City Council of Redwood City be sent to the Public Works.Administration of <br />the United States and to the Board of Supervisors of the County of San Mateo. <br />The Redwood Highlands Company submitted letter accompanied by map requesting permission to divide <br />Lot 5, Block 14, of Oak Knoll Manor, into five parcels. The request had been before the <br />Planning Commission and received its approval, so Councilman Fletcher, seconded by Councilman <br />Eva, proposed that the Council grant permission to divide this lotus requested, with the <br />provision that there should be one house only to a lot and not more than five houses, and <br />that the map be filed with the City Assessor. (The subdivision as shorn appears on the <br />records of the City Assessor but the map itself is filed in the City Engineer's office.) <br />L. E. Werder, representing the owner of the laundry building on Jefferson Avenue, appeared before <br />4 <br />
