<br />Upon roll call, the following Councilmen were present: Mayor Paul A. McCarthy, L. C. Chris-
<br />tensen, J. M. Eva, E. A. Fletcher, Rm. Hohn, R. N. Jones, G. R. McNulty and City Clerk,
<br />B. E. Myers. Absent: None.
<br />The minutes of the meeting of February 1, 1937, were approved, on motion of Councilman Hohn,
<br />seconded by Councilman Christensen.
<br />In a letter'to the Council, Frank O. Kington, Attorney, asked whether or not the Council in-
<br />tended to pay a claim of $2,550 in the case of Ruellan vs. Redwood City, Court No. 22044.
<br />Reply to the letter was referred to the City Attorney, on motion of Councilman Jones,
<br />seconded by Councilman Christensen.
<br />H. J. Fitzgerald, whose liquor business is a 949 Main Street, asked permission of the Council
<br />to hire a four piece orchestra for the purpose of running a'dance in a room adjacent to
<br />his present premises with a connecting door between. On motion of Councilman Hohn, secon-
<br />ded by Councilman Jones, the request was denied.
<br />At a -previous meeting the City Attorney had been asked to draw up and present to the Council
<br />at this meeting an ordinance licensing, at $24.00 a*machine a year, certain pin ball
<br />games, etc. Considerable opposition was manifested and several protestants were present
<br />and spoke against licensing the machines at all. Amont these were Mrs. Robert Garcia,
<br />President of the Sequoia P.T.A., Mrs. John Garland, former President of the P.T.A.,
<br />W. J. Owen, Secretary of the Redwood City Ministerial Association, Donald L. Bogie,
<br />Dean of Boys at Sequoia Union High School. Gordon Seeley also spoke on the subject, bat
<br />not in opposition. Following the discussion, on motion of Councilman Eva, seconded by
<br />Councilman Hohn, it was decided that the instructions to the Attorney to draw up the or-
<br />dinance be rescinded, with Councilman Fletcher voting "No". Following this, on motion
<br />of Councilman Eva, seconded by Councilman Fletcher, the Mayor was instructed to appoint
<br />a committee to investigate these gaming devices and to draw up an ordinance to regulate
<br />them. Mayor McCarthy appointed Councilman Eva as Chairman of the Committee to serve
<br />with Councilmen Christensen and Fletcher, with the City Attorney and Chief of Police as
<br />members of the committee.
<br />On motion of Councilman Eva, seconded by,Councilman Fletcher, Gas Fitters' Ordinance, fixing
<br />the license at $10.00, was introduced.
<br />On motion of Councilman Eva, seconded by Councilmen Christensen;<the City agreed to sponsor
<br />a A.P.A. concert about March 3 or March 10, with -instructions to the City Manager to pay
<br />the expense of the hall up to about $10.00.
<br />Councilman Jones asked if some arrangements could be made with property owners for the tem-
<br />porary surfacing of certain streets throughout the City with an arrangement to pay in
<br />installments the cost assessed against them. On motion of Councilman Eva, seconded by
<br />Councilman Fletcher, the City Manager was authorized to make suitable arrangements with
<br />property owners involved.
<br />Councilman Fletcher reported on the bus hearing before the Railroad Commission. Mayor McCarthy,
