-311 <br />Frank DePatta and C. G. Lambert spoke to the Council concerning the Harbor Festival <br />and wished a definite committal of $1,000 as a contribution toward the expense <br />of the festival, indicating that perhaps it would not be necessary to use all <br />of it. The appropriation was ordered on motion of Councilman Jones, seconded <br />by Councilman Pletcher. <br />On motion of Councilman Jones, seconded by Councilman Christensen, Floyd Granger, <br />representing the American Legion, was granted permission to hold, without a fee, <br />a dance in Forester's Hall on the night of September 11. <br />The City Attorney submitted a letter concerning the "in lieu" receipts from the state <br />and indicated that, in his opinion, "highway traffic" meant traffic upon any <br />of the streets in the city. <br />The City Manager notified the Council by letter that Major H. W. Edmonds had tendered <br />his resignation as a member of the Port Commission and recommended that Edmund <br />Scott be appointed to the Port Commission to fill the unexpired, term of Major <br />Edmonds. On motion of Councilman Eva, seconded by Councilman Christensen, the <br />resignation of Major Edmonds was accepted and the Clerk instructed to write <br />Major Edmonds a letter expressing the appreciation of the Council for his <br />services. Following the recommendation of the City Manager, Edmund Scott was <br />appointed to the commission for the unexpired term of Major Edmonds on motion <br />of Councilman Fletcher, seconded by Councilman Eva. <br />1 <br />i On motion of Councilman Eva, seconded by Councilman Hohn, the Clerk was instructed to <br />4 <br />write the State Board of Equalization concerning the request for a license by <br />s <br />iC. M. Ryberg, 701 E1 Camino Real, and to protest to the commission the granting <br />of such licenses, because it was felt that with several liquor dispensaries in <br />that block that the area was adequately served. <br />On motion of Councilman Fletcher, seconded by Councilman Christensen, Ordinance No. <br />I � <br />397 creating certain offices in the City of Redwood City and fixing and establish- <br />ing the duties and salaries thereof was introduced. <br />Councilman Hohn, seconded by Councilman Fletcher, proposed the adoption of the follow- <br />ing resolution which was unanimously carried: <br />s <br />"WHEREAS, a dispute between PACIFIC PORTLAND CEMENT COMPANY and its <br />employees over wages and other questions recently resulted in a strike of <br />i said employees; and <br />"WHEREAS said strike was promptly followed by intelligent and fair <br />negotiations between said employer and said employees which have resulted <br />in a very prompt adjustment of said disputes and the signing of agreements <br />between said employer and said employees for continued economic peace and <br />harmony; and <br />"WHEREAS, such conduct is worthy of commendation because of the inter- <br />est of the public in the settlement of such disputes; <br />°NOw, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of Redwood City <br />that Pacific Portland.Cement Company and the employees thereof be publicly <br />commended for their prompt action in effecting a settlement of said disputes <br />through negotiations and mutual concessions; <br />i' <br />i. <br />1 <br />i <br />
