included in Wharf Street upon the ground that the same is now and has been for <br />many years last past a public street in the City of Redwood City, San Mateo <br />County, State of California. <br />On motion of Councilman Fletcher, seconded by Councilman Christensen, the Council <br />y <br />went on record as favoring the inclusion of Redwood City in another inter- <br />city safety contest and asked Mayor McCarthy to reply to letter from Ray Ingels,, <br />Chairman of the Traffic Safety Commission. <br />a <br />A petition signed by some 63 electors residing in what is known as Friendly Acres <br />i <br />F <br />was submitted to the Council requesting annexation to the City of Redwood City. <br />3 <br />Benjamin J. Smith, representing the group, was duly sworn by the City Attorney <br />and answered several questions indicating that he was the one who circulated <br />i <br />the petition and that all of the signatures were signed to the petition in <br />;y <br />his presence. The City Attorney also submitted a letter from the San Mateo <br />z <br />County Clerk indicating, "There are approximately 72 registered voters in the <br />' <br />Friendly Acres District as of this date." This letter was ordered filed with <br />Y <br />the petition. As farther information was desired concerning the water system <br />i <br />in Friendly Acres, it was decided, on motion of Councilman Eva, seconded by <br />1 <br />Councilman Pletcher, to continue the hearing on the petition to April 18, 1939• <br />Councilman Fletcher, seconded by Councilman Jones, proposed the adoption of resolution <br />a <br />i <br />accepting easement executed by Hirosuke Inouye in favor of Redwood City, being <br />a small portion of land containing 272 square feet of Lot 11 in Valota Park. <br />Carried. <br />Councilman Pletcher, seconded by Councilman Christensen,proposed the introduction <br />of ordinance naming the alley running through Perry Subdivision as "Commercial <br />Way." Carried. <br />s; <br />Report on title to library property and the question of Union Cemetery were laid <br />over until the next meeting. ?, <br />In a letter from Frank A. DePatta, Secretary of the Clean Up Committee, request was <br />made that the City appropriate $200 for further publicity to further the <br />campaign. Paul Lowe in speaking on the subject indicated that merchants and <br />others would likely also contribute, making a total amount of approximately <br />$500 to be expended. It was therefore decided, on motion of Councilman Pletcher, <br />seconded by Councilman Eva, that the City contribute from $100 to $200 provided <br />the merchants and others raised the amount promised. In other words, the City, <br />i <br />up to $200, would contribute two-thirds as much as was raised elsewhere. It <br />was understood that all expenditures should be approved by the City Manager. <br />A. Passaro, a barber at 2118 Broadway, asked what could be done about setting up a <br />barber pole in front of his place of business. As there was some doubt and <br />confusion as to the operation of the ordinance affecting such signs, decision I <br />was put over until the next meeting. <br />
