1 <br />MINUTES OF REGULAR MEETING <br />PM700D CITY COUNCIL <br />JUNE 4, 1934 <br />8:00 P.M. <br />Upon roll call, the following Councilmen were present: Mayor, C. G. Lambert, L. C. Christensen, <br />J. Li. Eva, E. A. Fletcher, R. N. Jones, Paul A. McCarthy, Geo. W. McNulty. City Clerk, <br />B. E. t1yers. Absent: None. <br />The minutes of the meeting of May 21 were approved on motion of Councilman Christensen, seconded <br />by,Councilman Eva. <br />In opening the meeting, Mayor Lambert took occasion to make rather extended remarks. He said <br />he had a sincere desire that there should be a better understanding of the common purpose — <br />the greater good of Redwood City. -Mayor Lambert stressed the following points: (1) All <br />meetings should be called to order promptly. (2) That Councilmen and others refrain from <br />smoking during the meeting. (3) That the Councilmen, as a courtesy to the public, speak <br />loudly enough to be heard, and that the public extend the courtesy to the Council of bring— <br />ing only matters before the Council over which it might have jurisdiction. (4) That <br />economy in municipal affairs should not be practiced at the expense of public health, <br />public safety, education or recreation. He said "to curtail a constructive program of <br />service would be tragic; to enlarge such a program is imperative if possible. Let us <br />never reduce taxes to the point of insufficient funds for proper governmental purposes, <br />nor wages to the point of incompetent employees". (5) That consideration should be <br />given to some form of grade separation at the tracks; underpass or elevation tracks. <br />(6) That a more extensive telephone toll free service would be of benefit to the entire <br />community. (7) That it would be beneficial to have various problems of the city referred <br />to the Citizens' Advisory Committee for study. (8) The success and the problems incident <br />to the management of the Water Department were explained. (9) That an opportunity be <br />given some day, or during more than one day, for the citizens to be shown the<various <br />projects and objectives of the city. <br />Edward A. Barrer, Scout Executive, requested the use of a berth at the Redwood City Yacht <br />Harbor for the Burlingame Sea Scout boats. On motion of Councilman McNulty, seconded <br />by Councilman Eva, such permission was granted revocable at any time. <br />Asa Hall, President of the Pulgas Mosquito Abatement District, suggested that the Board appoint <br />some one to take the place of Carl K. Mabie. The matter was referred to the City Manager. <br />B. F. McDonald of Los Angeles, Director of the California Industrial First Aid Contest held <br />in Los Angeles May 17 and 18, in a communication addressed to Mayor Lambert, praised very <br />highly the work of the Redwood City Fire Department team. The letter was ordered filed <br />and the Clerk instructed to convey to the members of the team the congratulations of the <br />Council and its appreciation of the -time and effort this team put forth. <br />The Clerk read a letter from Lurline B. Roth, Proeidont of the San Mateo County National Horse <br />Show Association, in which it was asked that the Council contribute something toward the <br />expense of the proposed Horse Show to be held in August. It was decided, on motion of <br />Councilman McCarthy, seconded by Councilman Eva, that no contribution be made this year <br />77 <br />
