.92, .
i
life incident to accidents at such crossings. Councilman Jones stated his opinion that
gates were much better than any other kind of signals at grade crossings. Finally, Coun—
cilman Fletcher offered resolution protesting to the State Highway Commission the closing
i
of any of the four streets mentioned. The motion to adopt the resolution was carried,
with Councilman 14cCarthy voting "No". The City Attorney was asked to prepare appropriate
argument and represent the City at the hearing in San Carlos, Thursday morning. Carl
Stoner supplemented the discussion of the Council, stating that it was an absolute neces—
sity to combat this closing with actual data, and indicated the willingness of his Company
to cooperate with the City.
The Council took up again at this time the report of the Citizens' Advisory Board concerning
the desirability of acquiring the Electric Public Utility. Councilman 1;1cCarthy spoke at
some length concerning the advisability and the profit of acquiring this utility and urged
the Council to get the matter started. Councilman Eva stated he had not mane up his mind
either for or against such a project, but thought it best not to spend the money necessary
to make any evaluation of the physical property of the P. G. w E., affecting the Electrical
portion, until some effort had been made to ascertain whether or not the people of Redwood
City desired such acquisition. In this he was supported by Councilman Fletcher. Louis
Jenkins, Jr., appeared before the Council to protest submitting such a proposal and offered
certain figures to support his argument. W. 0. Tyson also indicated that he was not in
favor of it. Councilman McCarthy proposed, seconded by Councilman Jones, who considered
that the acquisition of such a utility would be a profitable venture, that the City take
the first step toward acquiring this property by having the Railroad Commission evaluate
the physical property of the Electric Utility. The motion was carried four to three,
Councilmen Christensen, Eva and Fletcher voting HN011
W. 0. Tyson asked for certain information concerning the cost and location of the Tennis Courts
at Mazes Plaza, and reply was given him by the City Engineer and Councilman McCarthy.
On motion of Councilman Jones, seconded by Councilman McCarthy, the City Manager was instructed
to proceed with the work of surfacing the Tennis Courts on the High School grounds pro—
vided the School Trustees furnish the material.
Councilman Jones, said he had been told that if the City levied any special assessment for the
payment of 1915 Act delinquencies, that no citizens of Redwood City could obtain the
benefit of the Home Owners' Loan Act. The matter was referred to the City Attorney to
see Attorney Morrisey who,it was said, had made the statement.
The City Treasurer asked the Council to select the Special Auditor for the ensuing year as the
end of the quarter was near. On motion of Councilman Jones, seconded by Councilman Chris—
tensen, it was decided to retain C. G. Uhlenberg for another year at his proposed price
of $425.00.
The Clerk read a long communication from the 1915 Improvement Bond Act Committee and a report
from the special counsel appointed by this committee. The correspondence told of the
present status of the litigation and of certain points which had to be cleared up, to—
gether with recommendations to be followed by the cities. It was requested that each
