124
MINUTES OF REGULAR 14EETING
REDWOOD CITY COUNCIL
MARCH 1+, 1940
9:00 P.M.
Upon roll call the following councilmen were present: H.F. Anderson,
E.A. Fletcher, Wm. Hohn, R.N. Jones, P.A. McCarthy, G.W. McNulty,
Mayor L.C. Christensen, and City Clerk B.E. Myers.
The minutes of the meeting of February 19 were approved on motion of Council-
man McCarthy, seconded by Councilman Anderson.
The San Mateo County Title Company submitted letter, accompanied by check
in the sum of $500, making a proposal to pay taxes on certain lots
in Lenolt provided penalties were waived. W.H. Morrissey, attorney,
and H.H. Weiner, representing Alex. A. Samson, 158 Finger Avenue, were
present and entered into a discussion concerning the proposal outlined
in the title company letter. Mr. Morrissey also stated that if his client had to pay
city and county taxes in full with penalties that the cost of the in-
dividual lots would run excessively high. The Real Estate Committee
had offered to make a $300 deduction in penalties, but Mr. Morrissey
considered this insufficient. After considerable discussion, it was
suggested to Mr. Morrissey and the others that perhaps the city would
agree on a fifty-fifty proposal so far as penalties were concerned.
The gentlemen took this under consideration and later made this pro-
posal: that they would pay all the taxes and one-half of the penalties
on about 25 to 30 of the lots and that on the others they would pay
the current tax in full with the understanding that they would be
permitted, within one year, to pay up the delinquent taxes and one-
half of the penalties. It was explained, however, that the proposal
was contingent upon the county supervisors making satisfactory adjust-
ment of county claims against these lots. On motion of Councilman
McCarthy, seconded by Councilman McNulty, the proposal was accepted
on the part of the Council with request to Mr. Morrissey to embody
the items of his offer in a confirming letter to the City Clerk.
In a letter to the Council, the Italian -American Progressive Club discussed
the parking problem in Redwood City and complained, particularly, of
i
the condition of parking around. the Court House. The letter was
