f
1•
the Pacific Portland Cement Company addressed the Council asking that his
company be given special attention because of its cooperation with the
city and its supplying work for so many people living in Redwood City.
So far as P. Sorenson's contract for sidewalks was concerned, the con-
tract had been let and neither the contract nor the specifi6ations stip-
ulated that the contractor had to buy any particular kind of cement. It
was thought, therefore, that this particular case should not enter into
the discussion. The attorney was asked, however, to make a report at the
next meeting concerning the doubtful point of the city's being justified,
legally or otherwise, in prescribing for city contracts that any one par-
ticular make of cement should be used.
J. J. Gorman, with two neighbors of his, protested the erection of a 19 -by -24 -
foot building; in the 700 block on Roosevelt. J. D. Raffensperger, the
contractor doing; the work, was also present and presented his side of the
discussion. The City Manager explained that after the Building Inspector
had issued permit for the building which was in compliance with ordinance
requirements, it was decided to withdraw the permit because of the size
of the house proposed to be erected, but that there was some question in
his mind as to the legality of doing it. On motion of Councilman Werder,
seconded by Councilman Edmonds, the Council concurred in the action of the
City Manager and refused Mr. Raffensperger permission to erect' the build-
ing. The City Attorney explained to Mr. Raffensperger that his only re-
dress would be to bring a civil action to compel the City to grant him
permission to erect the building.
F. S. Marshall asked ;permission, in connection with the removal of the store
at the corner of Harrison and El Camino Real, to change the construction
and make a two-story building, and submitted plans showing the effect
of the change. He was granted permission to go ahead with his construc-
tion on motion of Councilman Granger, seconded by Councilman Edmonds, pro-
vided his final plans were approved by the Building Inspector and that
he build an archway to hide the stairway in front.
The departmental reports were ordered filed.
The approved claims, Nos. 6517 to 6584, were ordered paid on motion of Council-
man McNulty, seconded by Councilman Christensen.
Adjournment.
BEM: HAS
City Clerk
