3
MINUTES OF REGULAR MEETING
REDWOOD CITY COUNCIL
JANUARY 169 1939
9:00 P. M.
Upon roll call the following were present: Councilmen H. F. Anderson, E. A. Fletcher, Wm,
Hohn, R. N. Jones, P. A. McCarthy, G. W. McNulty, Mayor L. C. Christensen, and City
Clerk B. E. Myers.
The minutes of the meeting of January 3 were approved on motion of Councilman McNulty,
seconded by Councilman Jones..
Carl Ward of the American Trust Company, representing client, asked special premission to
build a house on Lots 5 and 6 of Block 6, Central Park No. 1, facing Jefferson Avenue,
said house to be 37 feet wide. Building restrictions require that the construction
be no more than 70 percent of the width of the lot. However, in view of the special
physical conditions existing at the side of the lot, permission, as requested, was
given on motion of Councilman Fletcher, seconded by Councilman Anderson.
Attorney Edmund Scott, representing the Regal Distributors at El Camino Real and Cedar
Street, requested permission to erect at the'rear of the present structure an addi-
tion about 30 feet in length with concrete floor and galvanized corrugated iron walls
and roof. It was explained that the new construction would actually be at the corner
of Lathrop and Cedar. Permission to do the work according to the plans specified was
given on motion of Councilman Fletcher, seconded by Councilman McCarthy.
Attorney Edmund Scott also reported concerning the Adams' house, corner of E1 Camino Real
and Harrison Avenue, that it had been cleaned up and repaired. On motion of Councilman
Anderson, seconded by Councilman Fletcher, it was decided to drop the matter.
The City Manager, as requested at a previous meeting, filed a report concerning the improve-
ment of the creek between Middlefield Road and Broadway. His report indicated an
immediate possible cost of $1079000 plus a subsequent cost, after two years, of perhaps
$20,000 more. Mr. F. J. Furnivall thought the Manager's estimate of the cost of ac -
i
^ quiring the necessary land was high. It was finally suggested that Mr. Furnivall take
up with the East Redwood Improvement Club to ascertain, if possible, for what figure
the necessary property rights could be obtained.
I
There was some discussion about the desirability and the practicability of widening Jefferson
Avenue between Br6adway and Middlefield Road, and there was read, in connection with
this discussion, resolution from the American Legion asking that along both sides of
this block electroliers be installed. As there were engineering difficulties in ad -
dation to considerable cost for rights of way, etc., it was decided to do nothing about
it as present, but the City Manager was instructed to bring up the subject for discussion
at the time of formulating nest year -Is budget figures.
On motion of Councilman McCarthy, seconded by Councilman McNulty, bill of the California
League of Municipalities for $225 was ordered paid.
i
l
_ 4
