�n <br />i' <br />ri <br />Mayor Granger reported that the resolution -relative to workmen's compensation <br />insurance for volunteer Civilian Defense'Workers has,been approved by members <br />of the Redwood City War Council. Resolution offered byQCouncilman Anderson, <br />seconded by Councilman McNulty. Councilman Britschgi, under question, asked for <br />City Attorney McCarthy's opinion as to the advisability of passing such a reso- <br />lution, and whether or not it would bindthe city to continue with the, Civilian <br />Defense and War Council activities if the City Council decided to abolish such <br />activities. City Attorney advised the resolution would not bind the city, but <br />was following the directions of the State War Council which made it mandatory <br />upon the City to follow this procedure in order to protect the Civilian Defense <br />personnel without Cost to,the City. Resolution was adopted unanimously on roll <br />call. <br />City Attorney McCarthy advised the Council that in his opinion it would be necessary <br />to amend traffic ordinances as the only legal way to change parking limits as <br />covered by the existing ordinances. After discussion as to the legal means of <br />changing parking limits,'Councilman Fletcher moved, seconded by Councilman McNulty, <br />that this matter be,carried over on the agenda for the next meeting to enable <br />City Attorney to investigate along these lines. <br />Mayor Granger commented on live parking near pedestrian lanes referring especially to <br />the condition on Main Street near Middlefield Road. <br />Councilman Britschgi raised question as to the necessity of displaying <br />pedestrian signs in'the middle of the.streets, stating that these signs were beim <br />knocked down by vehicles in many instances. <br />On motion of Councilman Anderson, seconded by Councilman McNulty, these <br />matters were ordered referred to the Traffic Study Committee for their con- <br />sideration. <br />Mayor Granger suggested that a stenographer be present at future Council meetings in <br />order to take shorthand notes covering proceedings of same. City Manager Mead <br />f , <br />was requested to check into this matter. <br />Mayor Granger questioned Chief of Police Collins regarding men patroling streets be- <br />tween the hours of 4 and g a.m. Upon being advised that there was butone. <br />patrolman on duty during these.hours, Mayor Granger stated he believed there <br />should be at least two men on duty patroling. City Manager Mead explained that <br />shortage.of man -power was the reason for this condition, however, he stated he <br />would check into the matter with Chief Collins in an effort to change the working <br />schedule to take care of this situation. <br />Councilman Armstrong commented on the present building ordinance which was oecasionall1 <br />set aside to allow temporary buildings be erected stating that so far as hep er— <br />sonally,was concerned he would in the future vote against any relaxation of the <br />building ordinance and stating further that in his opinion, if this move appeared <br />to be necessary, ordinance should be amended to allow such relaxations. Council- <br />man Armstrong requested that the City Attorney study the situation and report <br />back at a later meeting. <br />Claims #3339 to 3396, net -amount $21,83.10, were approved for payment by Councilman <br />McNulty, seconded by Councilman Fletcher. <br />v <br />
